There is one fact of the holidays that is completely unavoidable: with Christmas comes family and with family comes traveling. Whether it's across the country or across the state, chances are you're going to spending some time in the car or on the plane. Here are some tips I've learned over my many years of roadtrippin' with the fam.
1. Have something ready to listen to. There are a thousand ways to listen to music in a car, but the most important thing is that it be ready to go so that you aren't having to mess with it as you drive. Pandora should be used only by the not-so-picky. People who have more of an opinion, like myself, should probably go ahead and make a playlist or a couple CD's with music they are sure to love. Also, don't be afraid to change it up! Download a bunch of podcasts on your phone! They are free, interesting and something a little different than 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' for the hundredth time.
2. Plan fun stops. One word: Buc-ee's. Granted, you will only be able to visit this amazing place if you happen to be going through the great state of Texas. But no matter where you are, there is something to see. Even if it is just an interesting looking gas station or a fast food place you've never tried, it;s bound to keep everyone afloat.
3. Bring some kind of entertainment for the children in the car. Whether it's a DVD player, an iPhone, an iPad, a handheld game system, or a good old fashion book - you're gonna want a way to distract them from the hours they're about to spend sitting in a vehicle. Obviously, something with headphones is probably ideal, but reading might also put them to sleep so that's an extra bonus.
Good luck and safe travels!
