School is out and kids are home. Suddenly mom has to work extra hours just to get a breather and kids home from college think they're going to just lose their minds without 24 hour wings and their new friends. You've got to get out of the house and have a change in scenery. If you live in Houston, you're in luck! There are plenty of things to go see this Christmas season and I am happy to list them for you! Check it out:

Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo through Sunday, January 15. Sip on hot chocolate as you stroll around the Houston Zoo taking in the displays made up of more than 2,000,000 lights and enjoy music from local carolers at the Reflection Pool stage at 7pm and 8pm each evening.

Holiday Installations at Discovery Green daily. For 2016, the park once again features its beloved outdoor skating rink The Ice at Discovery Green. Along with other holiday lights and decoration, you’ll want to be sure to check out the mesmerizing light displays FirmamentandEnchanted Promenade.

Magical Winter Lights at Sam Houston Race Park through Sunday, January 8th. Explore the seven themed areas of Sam Houston Race Park’s Magical Winter Lights.

Alley Theatre presents A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas through Thursday, December 29. Watch as Ebenezer Scrooge pays a visit to the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future during the Alley Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol. Discounted tickets are available for select shows.

Houston Ballet presents The Nutcracker at Wortham Theater Centerthrough Tuesday, December 27. This classic is sure to get you into the holiday spirit. Tickets start at $19, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale site. 7:30pm nightly.

Home Alone Screening at Saint Arnold BreweryThursday, December 22nd. Bring a chair and some blankets and settle in for a screening of Home Alone in the parking lot at Saint Arnold. Food and beer will be available for purchase. 6:15pm. Free!

Holiday Lights Tours on The WaveThursday, December 22nd. Hop on The Wave and gaze at spectacular light displays in neighborhoods like River Oaks and Woodland Heights on this annual tour. $35. 6:30pm.

Toy Story Screening at Discovery GreenThursday december 22nd. Join Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang at Discovery Green for a free screening of the 1995 film Toy Story. 7pm. Free!

Christmas Village at Bayou BendFriday, December 23rd. Stroll through Bayou Bend’s Christmas Village listening to carolers, playing with faux snow, crafting, and visiting the live reindeer. Tickets start at $10, not including ticket fees. 5:30pm to 10pm.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra in Concert at Toyota CenterFriday, December 23rd. Rock out with Trans-Siberian Orchestra at this 20th-anniversary show featuring special effects and new artists at Toyota Center. Tickets start at $47.50, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale site. 3:30pm and 8pm.

Elf Screening at Memorial CityFriday, December 23rd. Bring the whole family out to Memorial City for a screening of the hilarious movie starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf. 7pm. Free!

Houston Texans vs Cincinnati Bengals at NRG StadiumSaturday, December 24th. Watch the Houston Texans challenge the Bengals in this Christmas Eve game on their home turf at NRG. Tickets start at $50, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s online resale market. 7:25pm.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines.
