Those Workout Buddies Aren't Actually Helping Your Fitness Goals, It's Time To Exercise By Yourself

I used to go to the gym with my best friend every day, for months. It was extremely convenient because we went to the same gym and had similar schedules. I got leaner, lost weight, and drank an insane amount of protein shakes.

When the fall semester began, I stopped going to the gym and blamed it on my schedule. In all honesty, I could have gotten up earlier in the mornings or gone later in the evenings, but it just wasn't convenient for me.

Once my best friend moved out and I was faced with the idea of going to the gym solo, I was scared. I'm uncoordinated, kind of goofy, and can't lift nearly as much as I'd like. I don't have cute gym outfits or over-the-ear headphones. I felt like there was going to be a giant target on my back the moment I walked into the gym.

Flash forward to week three, and I've been going to the gym every day, taking pre-workout and eating protein-packed meals. Sure, my outfits aren't exactly flattering and I still get tangled in the cords of my headphones, but I'm going to the gym by myself, something I never thought I would do.

I noticed that when I worked out with my best friend, we'd be at the gym for an hour and a half, taking turns on machines or spotting each other. Now, I take 45 minutes to work out because I don't stand around chatting or debating what I should do next. I walk in and immediately begin my work out. I don't take forever because it's just me, my weights, and my music. I get in and get out and feel better knowing I did a great job at the gym, even if I didn't spend two hours there.

So if you're trying to get into hitting the gym, start working out with people you trust and can motivate you. Once you've got the hang of it, start going to the gym on your own. You'll get comfortable with your new routine and might even feel better knowing that you're focused solely on your workout.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
