On October 1st, 2017, history in the western world occurred when the newly elected leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the Canadian government was appointed. A Sikh man by the name of Jagmeet Singh now bears the name and responsibilities of the NDP. He has proven and shown to the world what a person of color, a minority is capable of when he dedicates his self to public service.

Now one may ask why someone living in New York City cares about a Canadian election? This election is not something that impacts me directly, but it shows the world that there is hope for myself to obtain any goal I intend to accomplish. I may live in New York, but as an individual living in North America, where many from my community have settled in, it is an honor to see such history created. For a person of color, and of South Asian/Indian descent I am proud to say that Jagmeet Singh has shown the world that nothing can stop one from succeeding.

This election changes the way that the South Asian community is viewed. It allows us to become part of a government which may have not previously given the community a voice. It gives us hope that, if the Canadians can accept the South Asian community wholeheartedly than maybe we can make a mark here in the United States.

However the question of how this election impact myself as a New Yorker remains. When considering the lasting effects of the Canadian election, many thoughts come to mind, primarily as a minority living in the United States. This election gives me hope to pursue a career in the Justice field. It creates an expectation to gain opportunities to achieve my dreams as a minority living in the west. It shows how far people have come in this part of the hemisphere despite the history and struggles that many have fought for everyone to be here to win. It empowers minorities to keep fighting for what they believe in, as it seems highly possible. It allows us to see that despite all the hatred and the faulty misconceptions towards any community can be changed. We can witness an individual achieve the goals they set their heart too. It inspires a young adult like myself, to indeed make the American Dream my parents came to the United States for come true.

Despite all the recent events that have been taking place for minorities groups in the United States, it seems that this election is here to make noise. Singh's new reign as the new leader of the NDP is a sign that no matter what roadblock may rise, minorities will be able to shine and leave their stamp on the world around them. It is a significant sign that leads the world by example; identifying the message that if you truly desire something you can always obtain it.

Now as an inspired minority, the desire to continue pursuing personal goals is stronger than ever. This election is a mere stepping stone on the long journey that I, alongside other minorities have obtained in leaving a mark in the western hemisphere. For the missions yet to come, and the roadblocks we have yet to face, let's look for our inspirations to reiterate everything that we stand for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
