Now that I have your attention, please hear what I have to say.
As usual, my family and I were watching television on a Friday night together. It just so happened to be Hell's Kitchen. I absolutely love this show. From Gordon throwing out shade every five seconds to every vulgar word that appears on the show. Plus I love food so that's a bonus. If you need a recap, here is the full episode.
Now during this particular episode, the red team (the boys team) won the first challenge. Shocker because I feel like the guys on this show always win the first challenges. So the women of this show lost and had to create fresh sausage links from scratch and eat a terrifying lunch while the red team got to enjoy a fun day surfing with five star dining.
Now when the guys got back to where the contestants stay from Hell's Kitchen I noticed something particularly odd. The contestant, Johnny McDevitt, and another guy from the red team were talking about the women on the blue team and the weakest links and who they could basically make cry. To recap, this begins at 21 minutes and 30 seconds into the episode. Okay, now I understand that this is for show so I continued to watch, then something particular caught my eye.
Johnny and his teammate were literally degrading these women to their faces. He went after not one, but two of the other women. Calling one of them "Splinter" and saying she resembles a rat. Now I understand that this is television and they do this for rating but I am utterly upset with Fox wanting to put something on the air like this especially after recent bad media coverage on a similar instance with Donald Trump.
(Here is Johnny for those not familiar with the show)
Now, I am no means okay with what Donald Trump said about women. My question to America is this: why is one public figure allowed to degrade women on national television, but the other gets attacked. This guy from Hell's Kitchen was basically being treated like royalty after saying his rude and derogatory comments. We find this entertaining in our media world. Again I understand that this guy from Hell's Kitchen is not running for president or a higher status but he is still considered a public figure and I find this outrageous. So why can one person degrade and another can't?
The media exposes some, and not the other, so how are these women from Hell's Kitchen suppose to feel when no one will stand for them? What type of country are we living in when only certain people are attacked and called out on for certain things, but not the rest?
As Americans we should be just as disgusted with what Johnny said, that we do with Donald Trump. But, here I am typing this, and there is no media coverage on what this young chef said to his fellow cast members. Not one outraged feminist, not one outraged social media platform, no one. So I ask, why the double standard?
