Last weekend, UF partnered with Lambda Theta Phi Fraternity, the department
of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs, and Student Activities and Involvement, and along
with GatorNights, showcased one of the
largest events of the summer: Gatormania!
With every floor of the Reitz Union swarmed by student organizations, viewers eagerly awaited the start of the show. Both directors and performers had dedicated months planning and practicing to put on the performances that displayed much of the talent and diversity found right here on campus. For the majority of incoming freshman, Gatormania was a preview of some of the activities they can join.
Originally called Salsamania, the annual tradition of Gatormania was created by Javier Ortiz, a Lambda Theta Phi Fraternity brother, with the sole purpose of helping to promote the smaller Latino based clubs on campus. The
event grew larger with the participation of other student organizations, extending beyond the Hispanic community. As a result, the university supported the development of the program into what has now become Gatormania.
Each year, the UF Lambdas continue to head and plan
the main components. They have thoroughly enjoyed giving back their
time and having this opportunity to celebrate their close knit brotherhood and
culture. Lambda Theta Phi is the first Latino fraternity founded at
the University of Florida.
Hours before the show, a number of organizations ranging from
Greeks, student government, the Asian American community, and other smaller clubs
engaged crowds of people at their tables. Passersby enjoyed winning small prizes
from mini games like PDPsi’s beanbag toss, FLP’s trivia, and especially Iota
Phi Theta’s bow and arrow shoot out! People also couldn’t resist the free food
and refreshments provided every Friday night by GatorNights.
With the lines out of the door, the Reitz Grand
Ballroom reached its maximum capacity. Nevertheless, the audience went wild as
the UF Lambdas and their visiting brothers proudly opened the show with their
signature salutes. Nothing could contain this crowd with each of the following
dances and step routines from each of the respective groups. The festivities
only continued long into the night with Calentura, the official Gatormania
after party, held and hosted by the Lambdas at Simon’s Nightclub.
The Gatormania experience is a must before you set foot in Gator nation. As UF Lambda, Andrew Wilks, comments,
“Gatormania is one of the best events here at UF and should always be a mission
to attend!”
Much hope goes to the continued growth and success of the event.
