From the suffragettes of the 1920's to the women's march this past January, we take pride in our strides towards equality between sexes. However, there still are double standards for men and women. I am in high school and there are some blatantly crude examples of sexism roaming the halls.
1. Sexual Promiscuity
Sorry parents, but it is no secret that in high school, teenagers want to experiment with others by hooking up and making out with others. I believe this is okay if you are being safe about your decisions, however, there are stigmas held over women for the same actions that men get no "repercussions" for.
Example Scenario: Sally used to date Jeff. This past weekend Sally slept with Conrad. Sally is labeled as "slutty", "desperate", and "gross". How is Conrad labeled? He is officially deemed a "player" and is congratulated for the splice of action he got on Saturday.
2. Dress Codes
Although my school is not ridiculous about dress codes and trusts us (mostly) to be able to dress in articles of clothing appropriate for the school environment, there are some schools that run dictatorships on the clothing a female student will wear. No straps thinner than two fingers, no shorts or skirts shorter than an inch above the knee, no flip flops, no tank tops, and no way can you show your collar bones! Jeeze, who knew that shoulders and the human skeletal system could be so sexual? There also are schools that have blatantly said that the dress requirements for girls is required in order to not distract male students. If a male student is getting distracted by my shoulders, then he should probably go see a psychiatrist for that.
Example Scenario: Sally wears a camisole and jeans to school. Sally is told to put on a sweater/jacket/sweatshirt by an administrator. Jeff wears a band tank top to school. "Hey, Jeff! I love Led Zeppelin too!"- Administrator.
3. Sports Events
This particular double standard, however, is not going to be one that will break easily. For centuries (think gladiator tournaments), men have been the only ones to compete in sports, and it wasn't until recently women's athletics had become more mainstream. We are open to watching more females sports, however, it is just a fact they aren't as intense as men's. Men can throw fists, shove, and kick each other, but a ton of female sports teams are required by rules of the game to be polite and proper on the field. It simply is not as entertaining.
Example Scenario: Jeff is a star football player, and at the Friday night game, the entire town shows up to support the boys. Sally is a star soccer player. At her Friday night game, a handful of parents arrive to show support.
4. Personalities
This is more of a stereotypical section. Both genders deal with stereotypes and I wish to shed light on both the bad and good.
Women: Emotional, crazy, intelligent, kind, dainty, and caring.
Men: Strong, immature, intelligent, and egotistical.
With all stereotypes, each must be taken with a grain of salt. Some women are indeed dainty, and while there's nothing wrong with that, other women are strong, fierce, and forceful. If we apply stereotypes to everyone, there is no room for growth, and as a society, we really do need to embrace change and growth for the betterment of the world.
