Both are great, but I miss high school

15 Reasons I’m A College Sophomore And Still Prefer My 4 Years Of High School

Most people describe college as "the best four years of your life."

I, however, have to disagree and say that so far, high school have been those best four years. Here's a little bit of insight into why I believe that to be true:

1. College can be lonely

Starting over, usually going into it not knowing anyone... it can be really scary and a lot of times you're left sitting in your dorm just wishing you were surrounded by friends and family

2. Homecoming/prom

Okay yeah there's formals and dances in college if you're in Greek Life but if not, there goes the opportunity to get a fancy dress, get your hair and makeup done and have a super fun night with all your best friends.

3. Friends that have been with you through it all

Chances are the friends you're in high school with are the friends you grew up with. They know everything there is to know about you and are going to stick by your side throughout it all. You never have to work too hard to find plans because you just assume you'll be doing something with your best friends every weekend.

4. There's very little structure to college

Sure this may sound nice to a lot of people at first but for those of us who like to know what's going on when, college can be a struggled. You no longer start class at 7:25 and get out at 2:25, instead you pick your own schedule and it's up to you and your motivational skills to get you where you need to be when you need to be there.

5. Everything is familiar

You're probably living in the town you've grown up in, with the same friends and there's nothing scary about that. Going to college, everything is new and unfamiliar and for many of us, that's terrifying.

6. Your family is around

You just have to walk down the stairs to hug your mom, versus having to drive 5+ hours to spend time with her.

7. It's easy to get involved

The daily announcements list every possible club/sport you can join so you can be involved in 84 clubs if you wanted to. In college it's a struggle to even find out what your opportunities are.

8. There's more of a variety of things to do on the weekend

In college your choices for the most part are frat party or staying in and watching a movie. There were so many nights in high school where my friends and I spontaneously went and did adventurous things. The is a lot more rare to come by in college.

9. There's so much pressure in college to have your life figured out

What's your major? What do you want to do when you graduate? Where do you want to go to grad school? What specialty do you want to have in that field? In high school you're just living life day by day but in college, I have to know what I'm doing four years down the road.

10. Classes are HARD in college

Sure AP and honors classes were stressful in high school but nothing compares to the stress of having 4 tests, 3 papers and 2 presentations all due in one week in college. Not to mention the material covered is just so much more difficult.

11. You have so many more important things to accomplish in college

Study for your 4 tests, write those 3 papers, have a social life, be involved in as many activities as possible, workout, oh and try to sleep some too.

12. Your mom still cooks for you

Nothing beats coming home from sports practice and having a home cooked meal set before you. News flash: that doesn't happen in college. It's up to you to make your own food or nasty dining hall food it is.

13. In college you have to start over, making a new image for yourself

Some find it a relief to be able to start over but with that comes a lot of a lot of pressure. Do I want to have the same reputation I had in high school? Will people like me if I'm just myself?

14. You can see your dog whenever you want

Nothing is worse than missing your dog while in college and knowing he/she is 800 miles away from you, while in high school he/she is just downstairs.

15. High school spirit/football games

Don't get me wrong, football games in college are a blast but are completely different in college. The school spirit just isn't the same as it was in high school and you don't get to wear ridiculous fun costumes and stand next to your lifelong best friends in the stands.

Don't get me wrong, college is great and important in so many ways but there are just days I wish I could rewind and relive my high school days.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
