10 Expectations Vs. Realities Come Winter Break

Things dont always go as we had hoped over winter break.

We all like to hope that winter break will be enough time to do all of the things we have been avoiding for the prior four months of being at school.

The truth is, not all of these things end up getting done.

We are all guilty of letting time slip by and although winter break sounds like a long period of time, it flies by and before we know it the second semester is a few days away.

While some, fortunately, spend the break working or away in another country, for those of us who depend on our summer jobs or procrastinated when planning a vacation, here are some high hopes that seem to have fizzled out.

1. Christmas gifts.

Expectation: I am going Christmas shopping as soon as I get home and I need to buy everyone gifts.

Reality: Maybe gift cards will do.

2. Diet.

Expectation: I'm going to finally eat healthy because I won't have to eat dining hall food for a month.

Reality: Christmas cookies, pie, pizza, and everything that I've missed out on this whole time. I deserve to eat it, right?

3. Organization.

Expectation: I am going to clean my room and finally get organized.

Reality: Lives out of suitcases and laundry baskets all break.

4. Communication.

Expectation: I am absolutely not going to text my ex from high school.

Reality: “Merry Christmas, I hope you and your family are doing well.”

“Oh and a Happy New Year!”

”How's your dog by the way?”

5. Physical improvement.

Expectation: I am going to go to the gym every day and finally get back into shape.

Reality: Maybe I'll just go tanning instead.

6. Going out.

Expectation: I can finally take a break from partying while I’m at home.

Reality: Somehow ends up at a bar anyway.

7. Traveling.

Expectation: Maybe I'll book a trip to Europe!

Reality: A flight to Italy is $1,500...never mind.

8. Money.

Expectation: I am not spending money this whole break, I seriously have to save up.

Reality: Spends more money being home.

9. Academics.

Expectation: Maybe I’ll take a winter class this break.

Reality: Literally never happens, unless you don't have a choice.

10. Sleeping in.

Expectation: My sleep schedule will finally be normal again.

Reality: Sleeps until 1 pm every day.

However each one of us spends our break, the bottom line is, it's a break for a reason!

A much-needed break after four months of stress and hard work.

So if any of these realities are true for you, remember that it is okay. We deserve this time off so we can recharge for the following semester!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
