Documentaries wouldn't be your first choice of a category, am I right? I thought the same thing until I caught myself finding one after another that pulled me in. Take my word for it: watch one of these and you will be in deep.
1. "Don't Call Me Crazy"
If you like mental illness shows, you will love this one! I was diagnosed with social anxiety a little over a year ago, which I believe caused my interest in this show.
We only get to see three episodes, but we get to go beyond the lives of a few high school kids admitted to a psychiatric hospital in England. It is extremely interesting to get as close as we can into their heads while they struggle through their treatment.
2. "40 Year Old Virgins"
The title already interests you, right? Dig into the lives of a couple people who are being counseled through losing their virginity. After going around 40 years without having that connection, it is a struggle for them to get through their insecurities.
3. "Babies Behind Bars"
This one is about a women's prison in Indiana that has a maternity unit which houses a select few of inmates. These inmates are pregnant while they are incarcerated. In order to keep their babies in prison, they must go through an extensive process to be granted their wish. There are only a handful of dorms available that every candidate wants. If they are rejected they must give up their babies 24 hours after giving birth. Watch how these inmates either redirect their lives as mothers or struggle through a broken mother-baby bond.
4. "Women Behind Bars"
This one explains itself within the title. Within three seasons, you get to see dozens of women who tell their story about why or why not they should be behind bars. As you can imagine, most of them are in denial about having done wrong; however, the stories they tell do not match up to the evidence.
5. "To The Bone"
A 20-year old girl is put into a group home with others who suffer similarly to her. Ellen's journey shows how treatment is rough, but she doesn't let anorexia nervosa define her.
We are able to watch this real life reconstruction about different types of anorexia within young adults and how it affects them. This show provides an intense story line throughout mental illness but incorporates family, friends, and fear.
6. "After Porn Ends"
I know what you're going to think, but in no way do you have to be personally interested in the adult industry to watch this show. People in the adult industry get to tell their story about their experience and what they did with their lives afterward. Some had optimistic things to say about their experience and others did not. Before you watch, do you think that they could have a normal life after porn?
The word "documentary" might scare some people to not search the category but after these? Documentaries are a big part of my List.
