Listen, there are stereotypes about everything, especially sororities. I'm here to give you the 411 on what sorority life is really all about.
1. Don't let anyone ever tell you not to join a sorority because it's "paying for friends."
Because that is so ridiculous and wrong. We pay dues for so many things. Homecoming, Greek Week, our beautiful homes, cute t-shirts, fun activities, philanthropy, etc. That money goes to things we enjoy and love. How else would we have any of that without a little money flow?
2. You gain great friends and definitely some family.
You are probably a freshman and want to find more/new friends. After all, you're a little fish in a giant pond and should probably get out of your comfort zone. You get to meet new and exciting people and build awesome friendships. That's the beauty of being in a sorority! Some of the people you meet might even become like family. I know I have gained lifelong sisters.
3. Connections, connections, connections.
I transferred to my school halfway through my freshman year. I had no involvement other than my sorority, which I knew almost no one in my new chapter. I was able to become active in my chapter and on my campus very quickly. You get to see what older members are involved in and can join things you would've never had the opportunity to do so. For example, I would've never had the chance to write for The Odyssey! My editor-in-chief is my sorority sister! Plus, when you are graduated and in your career, you may run into other Greek members and connect that way.
4. You can gain a lot of valuable life skills from sororities.
Have you tried managing a group of 200+ girls? I am grateful for my executive board because they do it so beautifully. Being a leader in the chapter can help you be a leader outside of it. Many sorority women are active leaders in other organizations on campus. You will also learn patience and great communication skills after having to round up all those girls.
5. You get what you give.
Some people have poor feelings towards Greek life, even former members. The only thing I can say is that I feel bad for those people. This may not be true to all those who don't like Greek life, but many bad experiences are caused from lack of involvement. I truly believe if I wasn't as active in my chapter as I am now, I would not still be a member. It's not fun sitting on the sidelines and watching everyone else have fun. You have to participate in the fun.
Being in a sorority is so much more than taking cute pictures and wearing your letters everywhere you go. It's about building lifelong friendships and bettering yourself altogether. So, if this sounds intriguing, I strongly encourage you incoming freshman ladies to go through recruitment! You won't be disappointed.
