There’s no denying that serial killers can be fascinating. Yes, it sounds scary but learning about the horrifying things they’ve done is like watching a car wreck. You want to look away but can’t because you’re going to miss something.
Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, Jeffery Dahmer are all killers with intriguing stories that are now being taught in schools and remade into movies. Another to add to that list is The Zodiac.
Here’s why I believe hit new series, "Riverdale," is based on the crimes that The Zodiac is responsible for.
1. Letters sent to the newspaper for publicity.
Both the "The Black Hood" and "The Zodiac" sent letters to local newspapers to gain publicity for what they were doing. In both situations, the letters in the paper created panic and increased their following.
2. They used coded messages in their letters.
The code in "Riverdale" uses very similar characters. The letters with the code are eventually figured out in both situations. In "Riverdale," Betty Cooper decodes the letter with a childhood book. With The Zodiac, a history teacher and his wife decoded the letters but there are still letters today that are yet to be decoded.
3. They killed people while wearing a hood
In "Riverdale," the serial killer gets his name from his hood. This masked killer is quickly identified by the title “The Black Hood”. A connection can be drawn between the two killers because in one of The Zodiac’s attacks he is not successful in killing his victims and the victim later told police that The Zodiac was wearing a black executioner’s mask.
4. They took credit for their crimes.
In the letters from The Zodiac, he began with “This is the Zodiac speaking” this is similar to The Black Hood because in the letters he begins with “This is The Black Hood.” The parallel between these two letters is undeniable. In both letters, they say the crimes they have committed and share their plans for future attacks.
5. They both attacked two people on “lovers lane”.
December 20, 1968. The Zodiac killed a young couple on Lake Herman Road also known as “lovers lane.” In "Riverdale," a young couple is attacked on “lovers lane” as well. In contrast to The Zodiac's victims, the couple in "Riverdale" survived the attack.
6. They killed in similarly named places and the victims had similar names.
The show takes place in a small town named Riverdale, one of The Zodiac’s attacks was in a town called Riverside. I don’t believe this is a coincidence. Further proof of "Riverdale" mirroring The Zodiac is the names of his victims. Two victims of The Zodiac were Betty Lou Jensen and Cheri Josephine Bates. In "Riverdale," there are characters named Josie, Cheryl, and Betty. These names are almost exactly the same as real victims.
It looks like there's a clear inspiration the creators of "Riverdale" are getting from The Zodiac's actions. Make of that what you will.
