One of the most nerve-racking things in life is waiting to know your future, especially when the choice is not in your own hands. You never know what you can accomplish until you apply- the opportunities are endless. It is time- the interviewer already has your application and resume, now you have to wow them in person.
1. Prepare yourself for any questions that the interviewer may ask.
You obviously don’t know what they will ask you once your interview comes around, but it doesn’t hurt to practice what you think you’ll say.2. Know the job description.
You have to know why you applied for this job. Try to refresh yourself on what the job is all about.
3. Understand what is required of you if you get the job.
You are expected to do the deeds requested of you. Try to imagine yourself working the job. If you think you’d be the best fit or would enjoy what you’re doing, you should apply. If not, there are other employment opportunities elsewhere.
4. If there is a dress code, follow it thoroughly.
If the interview requires that you wear “business casual” attire, be sure you dress appropriately. If there is no dress code, be sure to look presentable and professional at all times.
5. Be yourself.
Don’t pretend to be someone else in order to impress someone who doesn’t know you. This interview is about you and you only. Nobody knows who you are, so make sure they don’t forget you- but only in a positive reasons.
6. Don’t lie. Ever.
Do not lie to potentially get ahead. If anyone finds out about your deceit, not only will you not get the job, but this could prevent you from being hired elsewhere by those who network and associate with the establishment you’re interested in. Connections are vital lifelines here; they can either help or hurt you it just depends on how you treat them. First impressions always matter. Therefore, honesty is the best policy.
7. Be confident.
If you are not confident in what you say, the interviewer might think you might be nervous or insecure. Remember to be strong and believe in yourself, but don’t be too confident to where you reflect arrogance.
8. Show that you’re interested during your interview.
Actively engaging in the conversation will show how interested you are in the position offered. If you sit back and relax, the interviewer might think that you either don’t care or think you know you’ll get the job- and that’s a huge peeve.
9. Genuinely smile even if it hurts.
Nobody wants to be around someone negative, and sometimes when you don’t smile, you could come across as too serious, bored, or anxious. Smiling helps you seem friendly, energetic, and bubbly. Trust me, you’ll enjoy yourself more if you smile.
10. Be hopeful of the future.
It's not the end of the world if you make any mistakes during your interview or don't get the job in the end. Even if you don’t get the job you were hoping for, there are so many opportunities that will come your way. Have hope because you never know if you’ll be selected.
"I think an interview properly considered, should be an investigation. You shouldn't know what the interview will yield. Otherwise, why do it at all?" – Errol Morris
