Heather Brave is a proud New Yorker with her eyes set on a big dream. Not only is she a friendly and relatable 20-year-old, Brave is also a singer-songwriter who has already found success in the music industry. Her most recent single, "Spinning," is a ballad that shows off her vulnerable, passionate and raw vocals. When everything can get overwhelming, Brave always reminds herself to remain calm and feels revised by her own strength. This song is sung over a piano-driven production with a small string section, making it more intimate for listeners. "Spinning" is available for purchase and to be streamed.

Q: What was one hardship you had to overcome growing up in such a competitive industry?

A: I think the most important thing, despite rejection, hardship, and uncertainty, is to keep growing in your own direction. There have been times when I was unsure what the next move was, but I always remembered where I came from, sitting in my bedroom with a purple guitar covering songs by Regina Spektor and Mumford and Sons and that always reminded me why I do what I do and kept me from feeling lost. I always felt like I was the light at the end of the tunnel in a way, guiding myself to my most authentic version.

Q: When you're not working on something music related, what do you do during your free time?

A: I’m usually eating a lot of avocado sushi rolls, seeing moves in NYC (Call Me By Your Name was one of my favorite this year), and going to crazy workouts around the city like DanceBody and SoulCycle. I feel so lucky that I live in a city that’s overflowing with history and culture, and working out gives me invaluable energy that fuels everything else I do, making me feel confident and ready wherever I am after pushing myself in a fun way.

Q: Can you expand on your childhood and how you first got involved with music?

A: I saw a show Off-Broadway with a cast of all elementary school aged kids when I was 5, and I looked at my parents and said, “I want to do that.” I was 5, so they probably thought I was crazy, but something clicked and I knew I had to be performing. Later, when I started middle school, I shifted out of musical theater (and) towards writing my own music. My first song, which I wrote on my purple guitar, was called “Darlin, Darlin,” and had the simplest chords, but I was so enthralled by that feeling of having created something that wasn’t filtered, but really came from me, so I kept going. I’ve worked with different producers in NY, LA, and Nashville and I have completely found my voice and what I want to say with this new EP coming so soon!!!!

Q: What do you think makes you different than other artists?

A: I think that I have a really thorough but distinct spiderweb of influences. I say sometimes that my music is like the product of Regina Spektor and Britney Spears in a writing session. I’m not trying to be one specific thing or make my music a continuation of one kind of music. All of my tendencies have stemmed out of being impacted by so many different artists and how they tell a story and that makes it feel unpredictable and honest.

Q: What impact do you hope to have on your fanbase?

A: All of my songs happen to be about going for it and doing what you want, listening to how you feel, no matter what’s going on around you. I wrote these songs when I was moving back to NY from LA and it was a time when I felt like I was really taking ownership of my life and my voice. I’d really like for fans to feel that when they listen and feel unafraid and invincible.

Q: After everything you have experienced, what are some primary lessons you have learned?

A: Patience is invaluable. I’ve written hundreds of songs, but finding the right ones to show to the world what truly represents me has made me have to tame my eagerness to release everything all at once. Patience is SO worth it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
