Usually it takes time for an album to really sink in and make a mark on fans. For me, this impact came instantly by listening to just the first 20 songs. Chris Brown's "Heartbreak On A Full Moon" is one of the greatest R&B albums of this generation, and it took only 2 hours for me to come to that conclusion.
An album is very difficult to make, not that I know what it takes to make one. But from being a true fan of music, and listening to artists describe the struggle and hard work that goes behind perfecting a body of work... it is truly inspiring. More often than not, most albums contain anywhere from 10 to 20 songs. More often than not, theres a great chance that not every song on that album is a good song. Not to be negative, but it truly is difficult to put together a body of work that contains 20 amazing songs. The quality of an album is what separates the best artists at the top of the game from the mediocre ones.
I believe "Heartbreak On A Full Moon" is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard because a majority of its 45 total tracks, are good. Most of them are actually very good. This album is a mixture of his new hip-hop/trap sound along with his old R&B flavor and mainstream Pop-Radio ways. Truly the most versatile album I've heard in a long time. A prime example of this versatility are the first 5 songs. The album starts off with "Lost & Found" a smooth late night R&B record that serves well as an intro. Then it jumps into the smash hit "Privacy," which has been his primary sound over recent years. After "Privacy" comes a track that features an R&B legend and the lovely Jhene Aiko, called "Juicy Booty," which samples one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time. Then comes "Questions" which is Brown's newest killer single, that carries a heavy Caribbean island vibe. After this comes the title track, "Heartbreak On A Full Moon," which sounds similar to the R&B tracks on his mixtapes. He serves five tracks from the start that all have very diverse sounds, yet somehow they all sound great together on one album.
Thats the primary theme as you keep listening. Somehow, someway, he figured out how to make 45 songs full of different genres not only come together beautifully, but also tell a story. Throughout the album he speaks on his various episodes with women: the heartbreaks, the struggles of choosing the right one, the trust issues from past experiences, and of course the sexual encounters.
So far from the looks of my timelines on social media, the album is receiving great feedback from critics, and not just his fan base. If you haven't had the chance to listen to it, it definitely would be in your best interest to. Even if you don't have time to listen to 45 songs, at least check out some of them. I'll be spending the next month or so trying to learn all the words on my free time. Congratulations to Chris Brown on a fantastic album.
