Heart disease has become the leading cause of death in the US. From coronary artery disease to heart arrhythmias, the types of heart diseases are numerous. Aside from genetics playing a role, heart disease can be prevented from healthy lifestyle choices! And working towards a healthy heart while you're still young is crucial. Yes, that means you, young Odyssey reader. As a young adult, it is very important to start living a healthy lifestyle and abiding by that as you get older. In order to help you all get on the right path, here are some tips to a healthier heart!

1. Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week.

It may seem like a difficult task, but even a brisk walk in the early morning before school/work counts as exercising!

2. Eat foods low in trans-fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol.

Increasing your fruit and vegetable intake is crucial to a healthier lifestyle! And don't worry, your love for bread doesn't need to be kicked out of your food pyramid -- eating whole-grain products can get you one step closer to a healthier diet!

3. Cut back on salt intake.

As college students, I understand there can be late night cravings. Trust me, we've all been there. But replacing some healthy trail mix instead of potato chips will help you toward becoming a healthier you!

4. Reduce alcohol intake.

Too much alcohol can increase your blood pressure, chances of a stroke, and damage your heart muscle. However, on the other hand, moderate intake of alcohol can infact lower your blood pressure and increase the good cholesterol in your blood! (And by "moderate" I mean, no more than 2 drinks per day for men and no more than 1 drink per day for women)

So, the goal with alcohol is to consume it in moderation.

5. Manage your stress.

Stress is a large factor when you're a college student. It tends to affect individuals physically as well as emotionally. But, there are a variety of ways to cope with it. Whether it be exercise, taking up a hobby, or relaxing after a long day, giving your body and mind a break is crucial when you have grueling days filled with homework and exams.
