These Are Some Healthy Habits Quarantine Has Taught Me

These are some healthy habits to start implementing into your life. The quarantine and social distancing has put my life into perspective and I'm trying to focus on the things that truly matter to me. This is, of course, individual; all of us are not going to like the same things. But, these are some ideas to get you started if you are feeling stuck or lost.

Journaling

There's something so therapeutic about writing down my thoughts at the end of the day. Even if everything went wrong and no one is there for me or is listening to me, I know I will find a welcome audience in my journal. We're living through a huge historical moment, documenting your authentic experience is valuable.

Yoga

I'm on a journey to improve my flexibility and yoga is great for that! I practice in the morning and I take that time for myself. It forces me to slow down and to be in the present moment. It doesn't have to take long or be super complicated or expensive. I use my mom's yoga mat in my kitchen and that's what works right now. Compromise. Breathe. Reflect.

Meditation or Prayer

I seriously cannot stress this enough! For me, meditation gives me a sense of calm and it helps me set an intention for the day so I can be my best self. I personally pray and find solace in God, but I understand how that isn't for everyone. Find what works for you!

Cooking or Baking

Now that we all have the time, getting in the kitchen and whipping up delicious things is easier than ever. Yes, there isn't a lot in the grocery stores, but you can make it a fun challenge to use what ingredients you have to make something great! I didn't have eggs or butter at one point, but I used black beans to make brownies. Ok, they weren't like regular brownies, I'll be honest. BUT they tasted pretty good! I make all my own food now, which is a change because I live in NYC and the restaurants are amazing.

Reading

At college, it seems like we're constantly reading. But, if we read the things that we love and get lost in, it can help keep our minds off what's going on in the world for a few hours. When I was little, I used to read all the time. So, I'm reverting back to my 12 year old self and reading Percy Jackson, The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games and Harry Potter.

Painting/Drawing/Coloring

Art can be a creative outlet and a way to obtain inspiration for other aspects of your life. I am an emotional eater and I've been trying to channel all my energy and anxieties into drawing and writing to stop overeating. I'm not particularly good at drawing or painting, but I do it for fun. It gives my eyes a break from constantly staring at a screen for school or my job.

Weekly Cleaning and Organization

This pandemic has shown me that I should be cleaning my stuff a lot more than I actually do. I think that principle will hold true for many people as well. Cleaning my room, washing my sheets, etc. Gotta keep it clean!

Talking To The People I Love

I've never missed my friends more. This pandemic has taught me to value my relationships and to spend way more time with the people I love. I'm already making plans for road trips, beach days, clubs, and other fun things my friends and I are going to do when this pandemic is over.

Stay safe, practice social distancing, and we will get through this together!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
