Its that time of the year when everyone starts cramming in workouts to hopefully attain that perfect beach body before summer is over. While yes, we all want to look great it is important to think about why we are doing all these things to get that body. As someone who considers themselves to be in good shape and works out about five times a week, it is important to me to make the distinction between looking good and feeling healthy.
As strange as it may sound I genuinely enjoy exercising and eating healthy. Now don't get me wrong sometimes it can be painful and uncomfortable but it ultimately makes me feel healthier and more in tune with my body. While having that summer beach body is a nice perk that is not the main reason I do all these things.
While some may view me passing up a piece of sugary food as a result of self-consciousness, in reality, this is not the case. Eating a lot of fatty and sugary foods can make me feel bloated and uncomfortable. So for me eating healthy makes me feel better on the inside.
Working out has helped curb a lot of my anxiety and has made me a more focused and level-headed person. This is why one of my favorite places to workout is Soul Cycle. Soul Cycle places an emphasis on the connection between mind and body. I know I am getting a little kumbaya here but hear me out.
In my experience the healthier my body is the healthier my soul is. Exercise gives me a place to channel all my anger and anxiety allowing me to let it all go rather than just let it fester. Working out is not just about looking slim and toned its also about feeling fit.
I am a firm believer of having everything in moderation, so yes I still enjoy my chocolate from time to time, but I chose to eat healthier because that's what makes me feel good. This is the mindset that I think a lot of people who are trying to lose weight are missing. It should not solely be about looking good, it should be about feeling good and living a healthy lifestyle rather than just watching what you eat for that two-week juice cleanse.
