Ahh, dogs. The world’s best companion. I would know, I have my very own mutt. He doubles as my best friend and worst enemy. I couldn’t imagine life without him, but sometimes I wonder if it was a good idea to get a dog while college.
I personally cannot afford to care for him; I have to rely on my family for financial support in order to raise him. I also struggle to balance my time and commitments because he cannot be left home alone for hours on end. He requires a lot of attention.
My life is completely different now that I have a dog and I wouldn’t want it any other way. But, having a dog in college is not for everyone.
I cannot tell you how many times I have seen a posting on Facebook or in GroupMe of a college student giving away their puppy because they cannot care for it anymore. That honestly breaks my heart.
That innocent little dog just came from at least one home to yours, and now is expected to adjust to another? What happens if no one can care for the dog? Does it end up in a shelter all because you were too selfish to think about the responsibility over the cuteness factor?
College kids, I encourage you to have a dog, if, and only if, you can 100% commit to it. Financially, emotionally, time-wise, the whole nine yards. A dog is a ridiculously huge commitment and isn’t something you can neglect.
If you do decide that you are ready to commit to a dog while in college, I promise you it is the best decision you’ll make. When I’m tired at night, lying in bed, I have a little nugget curled up next to me. When I get home, he is always excited to see me. We know each other’s moods, we play, and most importantly, we snuggle. My dog is my life and he is the biggest emotional support I have ever received.
