Although I have never had a dog, I am a true fan. You may say "well you don't understand the huge responsibility they can be." As a student athlete, I assure you I can handle a lot, and a dog is something that would definitely be a joyful responsibility for me. You might ask why would your parents deprive you of having a dog? Every person should grow up with a dog. Yes I know it's sad I actually had to eat my vegetables as a kid, and I never got to use the dog ate my homework excuse. Instead, I was stuck watching those 47 cent fish you get at PetSmart swirl down the toilet two weeks after they were bought. While I was lucky enough to have a dwarf hamster, sadly she died too...RIP Lily. As fun as that phase was, I would prefer to have a different four-legged animal, one that is often referred to as "man's best friend." As a non-dog owner, here are some things I miss out on:
1. The Ultimate Workout Buddy
Even on the laziest of days walking the dog still has to get done and let's face it, we all need that four legged friend that will be able pull us up that last hill to finish the run.
2. A Cuddle Buddy
On a cold day who else can you always rely on to take a nap with, in the middle of the day and watch a Netflix movie marathon while snacking? Research shows that 87% of dogs will curl up beside them while they watch T.V. (sorry for the other 13%).
3. The Energy Bunny/Dog
No matter what happened that day, walking through the door you're greeted by endless kisses and excitement. Who wouldn't want that?
4. The Unexpected
There is never a dull moment. Your dog will always keep you on alert, knowing that silence for too long is never a good thing especially when they break into the food supply.
5. Our Therapist
Dogs understand us and our moods. That's why they are being used in a variety of different ways to help humans around the world. Dogs can detect epileptic seizures as well as fear, sadness, anger, and how much you like someone. Spending a day away from everyone to be with your dog is super beneficial and could be just what you need.
Although I am dog-less, I guess it wouldn't be fair now that I am away at school for most of the year. Instead, I'll stick to saying Hi to every dog I see on-campus.
