Have You Guys, Y'all And You All Noticed What Has Changed About Me?
Tom Magliery

Well, I've now spent an entire half-year in someplace new to me. People always ask me, what are you enjoying about college, and what has changed about you?

I think we are all tired of that question, because everyone and I mean everyone seems to ask that same question. Friends from back home, personal relatives, our parent's friends, old teachers, coaches, everyone. I think they all want me to give them some sort of awe-inspiring, philosophical speech about the meaning of life. I'm not going to give that same speech over and over again, one, because it's boring, and two, because it isn't true.

But something really obvious has changed about me, but most people are not going to notice at all unless they pay specific attention. It's like that library book that we all had when we were in second grade that was lost on due day, that nobody in the house can find until we notice it's been right in front of us the whole time. Yeah, what has changed about me is really kind of like that.

"The New York Times" put out a really cool feature a few years ago called "How Y'all, Youse and You Guys Talk." Essentially they give you 25 questions about your dialect along the lines of How would you address a group of two or more people? The answers include words like 'Y'all', 'You Guys' or 'Youse Guys'.

After answering each question you are given a map of the United States that will list the three cities you dialect most matches and the three cities it least matches. Areas of the country where your dialect matches the area it's in will be in red, with the brightest shades of red representing your strongest area. Places the dialect doesn't match will be in blue, with the dark blue meaning your dialect would be very different in that area.

If Forest Gump, for example, took the quiz, Alabama would be in the brightest shade of red, with the rest of the South in more mild red. The rest of the country would be in blue, with the big cities in darkest blue.

I took the quiz right before move-in back in August and saved the results.

Above you see the cities I most matched with, and below are the cities are least matched with.

Remember, I was born in Michigan and moved to Tennessee around the age of five, where my family and I settled down in and remain to this day. So why was my accent so Western? Despite being raised in the South, I've never really considered myself Southern. My father's family moved almost every few years when he was growing up due to his father's (my grandfather) job in the geology industry, but he never left the Gulf Coast Region until going up north to Upstate New York to attend Cornell University. After that he bounced around New England working at Ski Resorts until he met my mother. So it did surprise me that I spoke so unlike a New Englander.

My mother was born and raised on Long Island, where she spent her whole childhood until heading to the Midwest to attend Northwestern University. She then met my father in Boston until they went to Washington and then Ann Arbor for job and graduate school opportunities.

Being in college at a school as diverse as the University of Miami has allowed my accent and dialect to change because people come from all areas, of the country and the world. I no longer say tennis shoes; I say sneakers. While I interact with a lot of people from all areas of the country, I'd say I do the most amount of talking with South Floridians, such as Uber drivers, professors, Miami locals at school, and employees of business I go to. That 100 percent showed when I retook the quiz during this winter break.

Yep, all three of my top cities are in South Florida, now some of that is due to having relatives in that area, but actually living my life down here for several months has obviously made a humorous difference too. On top of that, my interaction with Northeasterners has skyrocketed while my interaction with Southerners has plummeted, leading to an overall change in the layout of the map other than the top three cities.

This is what has changed about me the most. Not the way I see the world, not my inner self or anything like that. The way I talk is the thing about me that is the most changed by being at college.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
