I Have A Hero And I Call Him Papaw

I Have A Hero And I Call Him Papaw

What would life be like if we did not have influential people to look up to? How would we know what to do or how to live? Our values, morals, and ethics all come from the teachings and beliefs of somebody who we consider a role model in our lives. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a role model as someone who another person admires and tries to be like. I am a blessed young woman, for I have many wonderful role models in my life. One role model in particular, however, that stands out to me is my grandfather, who goes by Papaw in our family. Papaw is a brilliant man and an excellent example of what a role model should be. I admire my papaw significantly and believe that he is the greatest role mode I have, because he is a man of God, very family oriented, and just an overall good person.

My papaw is a very religious, faithful man. He is Catholic and proud of his faith, as he should be. Papaw puts his trust in God and his actions are those that reflect his love for Jesus Christ. He rises early every Sunday to attend church so he can praise the Lord, but his worshiping is not limited to our small church in our tiny town. Papaw has a small room at home known as the Prayer Room. This is where he can have his time for prayer, conversations with God, reflection, and reading. Papaw truly understands the importance of having a relationship with God, how much God loves each of us, and what God wants from us. No matter what happens, Papaw knows that God is always there. The amount of faith Papaw shows is one reason as to why he is my role model. I am new to the Catholic faith, but I hope that I can one day be as devoted as he is. I strive to have the relationship with God that my papaw does.

My papaw is family oriented, which is a second reason as to why he is such a great role model in my life. Papaw will go out of his way to help a member of his family. He never lets us go without and he tries his hardest to make sure we can take the opportunities that come our way. My papaw, being the good man he is, will wake up early to make breakfast for his family and cook waffles for his first-born granddaughter (that's me) at 10 o'clock at night. Papaw respects my grandmother, known as Mamaw, and shows the boys in the family how to be a good husband. He is willing to listen to our problems and give any advice he can. Papaw attends the school functions of his grandchildren, changes dirty diapers, and hosts family gatherings all throughout the year. I know how much my papaw loves me and our family. He truly goes above and beyond for our family and I appreciate him greatly for all that he does.

Papaw is a firm believer in God and a great family man, but he is also just an overall amazing person. My papaw is so forgiving and understanding, maybe too understanding. He knows that we have faults, just like he does, and he accepts everybody for who they are. My papaw does not judge others based on appearance or first impression. He is the kind of man who wants to get to know a person, gives chances to people who might not be deserving, and loves all. My papaw believes that he is blessed with what he has. He does not envy others for their possessions, because he is happy with what God has given him. One of my favorite characteristics of my papaw is how he works to resolve conflicts. Papaw does not like to stay angry and he does not like for others to leave angry. He would rather sit down and have a discussion to work out whatever problem may be going on. My papaw is also a helper. He volunteers at church and for Knights of Columbus, and he is always willing to help a friend or family member out. Papaw is also an honest man, which is another one of his characteristics that I love and admire. I feel like some of these aspects are rare nowadays, but my papaw remains to be a great person even in a world like today's. I'm thankful to have such a positive role mode in my life.

My papaw is my hero, my role mode, and my inspiration. He provides me with several amazing examples to follow in life. Papaw has so much faith in God, loves his family very much, and is a great man in general. He is one of the most caring, honest, and loving human beings in my life. I'm so grateful that God allowed me to be this brilliant man's granddaughter. Without his influence and guidance, I honestly do not know where I would be today. I try my best at everything life throws my way, and he is one of the biggest reasons as to why I work as hard as I do. I want to make him proud of me. My papaw is such an incredible role model in my life, and I hope to follow in his footsteps and be the kind of person he shows me he is every single day.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
