Are you a gamer? Have you ever played a video game and found yourself incredibly disgusted with the villain of the game? Or even one of the characters you thought perhaps was just background cast only to find out they are the villain in the end? I know I have. Since I was young, I have been playing video games, and yet, even now I can still tell you all about the one video game villain I despise more than anything.
Let me drop you a few hints and see if it clicks for anyone before I announce who it is.
This game was first released in North America October 18, 1985. The original system was for Nintendo Entertainment System. NES as we lovingly call it. What? That is not enough of a clue? How about this? It requires a gun to play and is often now found packaged with Super Mario Bros. Do you have an idea now? I would hope so.
That's right. I'm talking about Duck Hunt. I know you're more than likely asking me what villain I'm referring too as that game is about shooting at ducks. Is it though? After all, who doesn't spend most of their time hunting the dog that fills the game laughing at you every time you miss; or when it jumps out in front of you as you're trying to aim for an unusually low flying duck, so you lose of course. Not to mention in the bonus levels where if you hit the dog you instantly lose.
Talk to most anyone that has played this particular game, and they will lament to you the exploits they've had with this dog. I've read countless articles that you can, in fact, shoot the dog for points in the game and I understand that it is supposed to represent a hunting dog that goes after the downed birds if appropriately trained. It is the laughing that annoys most people.
Duck Hunt is one of those classic games that everyone has heard about, though probably not played. I've never been able to beat the game properly; I would get too frustrated with the dog popping out randomly and laughing or missing and hitting the dog.
I love animals, and I never wish them harm, but it is hard to stay on track when you've got an annoying pixilated dog laughing at you. Try as you might, the dog will not stop, and there are no options or features to turn the dog off or make it stop laughing. Unlike most games now, old NES games did not have customization. There was no changing colors, text, fonts, or anything like that. There was also not an easy mode or a hard mode. It was merely the game, and you played it and suffered the struggles and hardships that everyone else did.
Even now I find myself talking to friends about games and we all agree. Everyone hates the Duck Hunt dog.
