Like most people's passions, there are going to be people that think that yours is amazing and great and they agree on every level, and then there are going to be people that will put it down no matter what.
Being a math major is hard. No doubt about it. I love math though. There is something so cool about the fact that someone discovered all of these theorems and algorithms and everything about it. I discovered that I wanted to take this path in tenth/eleventh grade and have stuck with it ever since. The most common conversation I have with people asking about my major is, "Wow, you're a math major. That sucks." Well guess what? I don't care what you think.
So you hate math? I don't care.
Everyone hates something. I mean I don't love tomatoes but I don't tell people who eat them religiously that their love is wrong. I don't go around knocking other people's passions just because I don't agree with them.
So you suck at math? I don't care.
Now don't get me wrong, if you need help I GOT YOU. If you hate something because you're not good at it though, that's very childish and stupid. Don't put something down because you don't get it.
So you think it's a lot of work? I don't care.
Yeah, it's a lot of work. For a small major it's very hard. People struggle with math and then take these classes for four years because they love it. People work hard for the things they love.
My relationship with math is one of which I could break. I struggle through my classes going to office hours daily. I spend hours on homework problems that just seem impossible to solve. I can't stop loving it though. At least 80% of people wind up changing their major in college, but that's not going to be me. Everyone says find a career you love and you'll never work a day in your life. Math itself is work, but it's not work that's painful to do. It makes me upset only because I want to be the best that no one ever was (Pokemon reference?). So don't knock my passion because it's not yours. Don't put something down that I love because it's too hard for you. Don't hate on something because it's too much work for you to put in the minimal effort to pass your math general education requirement. There are classes that I'm bad at too. There are subjects that I have tried to avoid like the plague. At the end of the day though, that doesn't matter to the people involved in them. So you say you hate math. Well I don't care. Less people to compete for jobs with. Less people to compete for grades with. Most importantly, less people who are getting into a job field that they don't want to be in. So thank you for hating math!
