There’s two things you should know about me: 1. I’m a firm believer that Samoas are the greatest cookie ever created, and 2. Nothing makes me roll my eyes more than white liberal feminists stripping me of my feminist Girl Scout badge because I don’t like Hillary Clinton.
When I use the phrase “white liberal feminist” I’m talking about the select group of feminists whose feminist discourse only covers privileged white women who assimilate into the system rather than dismantle it. White feminism lacks intersectionality, and liberal feminism can be summed up as the “make it in a man’s world” feminists. If this white liberal feminist circus had a ringleader, it would be Hillary Clinton. She merely utters the word “women” and libfems see it as peak feminism.
The amount of women who condemn me a “fake feminist” simply because I refuse to buy into Hillary’s gender identification as a completely valid reason to cast my vote for her baffles me. Maybe I’m feeling too much of a third-degree Bern to listen to her, but all she has proven to me on this campaign trail that women, feminism, and intersectionality mean absolutely nothing to her.
I’m lucky enough to live in Virginia, a state with no party affiliation, which gives me the freedom to choose which primary I wish to participate in. The GOP is currently being dominated by a turnip dressed as an Oompa Loompa, the Zodiac Killer, and some guy from Ohio. The Democratic race has the White Feminist Icon and the guy who probably knows when the world ends but no one believes him because he’s always fumbling. I would love to have a woman in the Oval Office; however, Hillary is not that woman.
Repeat after me: It is not anti-feminist to not vote for Hillary Clinton. It is not anti-feminist to not vote for Hillary Clinton. It is not anti-feminist to not vote for Hillary Clinton.
Madeleine Albright, the first woman to hold the position of Secretary of State and modern, feminist fairy-godmother recently endorsed Clinton. She concluded her speech by saying, “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!” ...As if any of these “feminists” have spoken about intersecting issues of race, class, ability, non-binary gender identity, and sexuality among women. Gloria Steinem, the hippie-clad curator of second wave feminism said women voting for Bernie Sanders are only doing so to meet boys...because, y’know, women only have hormones and not brains, and therefore can’t make any decisions themselves. She’s even grasped support from the inventor of white feminism--“Girls” creator Lena Dunham.
Breaking news: Voting for Hillary Clinton won’t end sexism. Voting for Hillary Clinton because you “want a vagina in the White House” won’t end sexism. Sexism is a systematic form of oppression that has taken form in jokes, microaggressions, souvenirs, Donald Trump, and it even comes in a handy internalized form within women themselves. Women’s liberation shouldn’t be purchased by super PACs and corporations. Her “corporate feminism,” as I like to call it, is capitalizing on the feminist movement to garner votes simply because of her gender identity. That’s not how feminism is supposed to operate.
Hillary runs on a “pro-women”/“pro-feminism” platform. However, she slut-shamed Monica Lewinsky and President Clinton's other affairs, rather than sympathizing with victims; she had a Black Lives Matter protester removed for speaking, unlike another candidate who allowed BLM protesters to speak on stage during his rally (hmm, wonder who that could be); she fails to recognize that minority women suffer higher pay gaps than white women; she continues to support a narrow view of the LGBTQ+ community by marginalizing them as the "gay" community; and proliferates her “feminist” platform in a system that is designed to oppress women rather than fixing it. The white liberal feminists supporting her even attempted to call out Bernie Sanders for being “sexist” when he told her to stop interrupting him.
The ideology of feminism is much more holistic in nature than the ideology of Clinton’s time. Sexism is a systemic issue that intersects with other issues. Feminism is not meant to be one size fits all; although if we continue to ignore the toxicity of white/liberal/corporate feminism, women’s disenfranchisement across the board will not improve. I’m not sure these feminists understand how racist and exclusive the movement was historically.
It’s not that women aren’t strong enough to hold the highest position in the land--they clearly are. But politics have continued to disadvantage women, and they have doubly disadvantaged people of color, members of LGBTQ+ community, non-able bodied persons, and lower class persons. Hillary Clinton will continue to run with the idea that she has feminism’s best interest until the day of the National Convention. But if we as intersectional third-wave feminists do not recognize these problems now, we will not progress. Voting for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman will not end sexism...it might actually increase it.
