Last week, writer Dr. Jen Gunther, released several tweets concerning female menstruation. One of her tweets, stated "If men had periods, pads would be free."
DrJenGunter If men had periods pads would be free 9/5/16, 10:21 PM |
The tweet started the viral hashtag, #IfMenHadPeriods. Women and men alike started a thread discussing the lack of controversy that would be placed on menstruation if men received the monthly visit.
SwiftOnSecurity #IfMenHadPeriods there would be free tampon dispensers every 20 feet, by law. 9/6/16, 11:20 AM |
BriJamie #IfMenHadPeriods tampons/pads would be free, you'd have time off from school/work, we'd have a pain killer that ACTUALLY stopped cramps. 9/6/16, 10:16 AM |
Curtis_Pope #IfMenHadPeriods after having menstrual cramps ONCE they would instantly realize how silly they look when questioning a woman's toughness. 9/6/16, 4:45 AM |
While many were for pointing out the injustice behind the struggle females face with periods, the controversy with the hashtag occurred because of its lack of acknowledgment for the trans community.
aewgallagher re: #IfMenHadPeriods • Lots of men do have periods • Lots of women do not have periods yr feminism means nothing if it erases trans people 9/6/16, 3:38 PM |
deadpooIish #IfMenHadPeriods this tag is so cisnormative. Trans men can have periods. Menstruation is not gender exclusive 9/6/16, 12:31 PM |
anatweeta This is why it's important to understand that #MenDoHavePeriods since #IfMenHadPeriods is trending! Casual cissexism https://t.co/sL5xaNzjeZ 9/6/16, 12:19 PM |
Many argued that the hashtag should be changed to #IfCisMenHadPeriods so as to not exclude individuals that menstruate and fall on different ends of the gender spectrum.
NixRedux #IfMenHadPeriods oh but they do. I'm a man, and I've got a uterus. I bleed without my T. What you mean is #IfCisMenHadPeriods . 9/6/16, 4:25 PM |
thatkatiemack Using #IfCisMenHadPeriods instead of #IfMenHadPeriods costs two seconds and three characters. You can do it. I believe in you. 🙄 9/6/16, 2:47 PM |
CharCubed #IfMenHadPeriods ➡️ #IfCisMenHadPeriods Because that's REALLY what this conversation is about. It has some validity, but it's exclusionary. 9/7/16, 11:54 AM |
Although Dr. Gunther probably did not intend to start such a controversy on twitter from her initial tweet, the vitality of the hashtag shows the changes being made behind the idea of gender and sexuality.
What do you think? Does this change the argument that periods would be treated differently if cisgendered men underwent them instead of ciswomen? Or does it further unveil the inequality that both women and members of the trans community face over their cisgendered male counterparts?
