America's Criminal Justice System Needs To Do Better When It Comes To Sentencing

The Chicago case is no expectation of the lack of interest in cases.

I recently came across an article from "The Chicago Tribune" regarding an update to a case about an attack that took place on Social Media, involving four young adults surrounding another young adult in Chicago. The Attack, according to the "Chicago Tribune," took place in January.

This case first gained local and national attention when a video surfaced on social media showed four suspects, all African-American, cutting the 18-year-old victim’s scalp with a knife and punching and kicking him in the stomach.

This all took place while the victim was being laughed at and being tormented for his support for then, President-Elect Donald Trump. The video, often gruesome, drew condemnation from many, including then-President Barack Obama.

"The Chicago Tribune" also reports, fortunately, the victim, who suffers from schizophrenia and attention deficit disorder, got away from his attackers and was able to be treated at a local hospital for cuts to his head, face and body.

This attack, in my opinion, deserved more than just prohibition. The very fact that the suspect, Brittany Covington, was sentenced to four years of prohibition and banishment from social media is disrespectful to the family of the victim.

Even though she was in prison for almost a year, a prohibition sentence was still light sentence for such a terrible crime. Her accomplices are working out plea bargains as of this article, which could result in light sentences for them as well. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, as the criminal justice system has been going light on crime that deserved stricter punishments for years.

Here are just a few examples of crime that could have received harsher punishments.

Perhaps the most infamous case of racial discrimination of the late 20th century, the case stemmed from accused “police brutality” against Rodney King. After being pulled over on the 210 freeway outside of Los Angeles, King was pulled out of his car instead of being asked to step out of his vehicle and beaten to the ground and arrested all for driving under the influence.

A videotape shows evidence of King being beaten and placed in a police car. After an investigation, which led to an indictment, the accused officers were found not guilty.

This led to catastrophic rioting across the city of Los Angeles and forced then-President H.W. Bush to send national guard troops to assist in recovery efforts. This obviously could have gone differently if the criminal justice system would have worked in the favor of Mr. King, who was clearly the victim.

In December 2008, the remains of Caylee Anthony were discovered in the trunk of Casey’s abandoned car. It is believed that the remains were there for a few days.

According to CNN, Caylee was not the reported missing until a month after the two-year-old was last seen, and that led detectives to believe that Casey had something to do with her daughters’ death.

After less than 11 hours of deliberation, the jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of the murder of her daughter, however, she was found guilty of lying to the police and faces up to a year in jail for each of the charges that she lied to the police.

This verdict led to a nationwide outrage, and a Facebook page that was called, “I Hate Casey Anthony” and drew 40,000 fans, according to CNN.

There was also a lot of speculation that Anthony got away with murder as exactly how Anthony died remains a mystery. According to USA Today, Anthony could have had some help as there were reports that Anthony was living with her case’s Private Investigator, which could have, in some way or another, influenced the case in her favor.

I feel that this was an unfair case in the sense that it was not as thoroughly investigated as it could have been. They could have had more witnesses take the stand, for example, instead of just Casey’s family, they could have had people who knew of Casey and her character testify as well.

These two cases are just some examples of how the Criminal Justice System needs work. In recent years, there have been a lot of cases that seemed, to me, as though they were rushed.

The Jurors that have been selected in recent cases, seemed disinterested, or eager to get the case over with. For example, CNN reported that at the closing of the Casey Anthony trial the jurors declined to speak to reporters, and a court spokeswomen reported that, “They are just Interested.”

This meant that they wanted to get the trial over with as soon as possible. With the understanding that some cases are harder to deal with than others, some cases need more time to process and deliberate over, and that has been lacking lately.

The Chicago case is no expectation of the lack of interest in cases, and my hope is that the other three defendants are taken more seriously, and are given harsher punishments and not just prohibition.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
