Harvey Shines Light On The Good Of The World

Hurricane Harvey has devastated the city of Houston and the residents of the city, removing around 32,000 people from their homes.

The city of Houston has been visited by the President and been in the headlines for weeks, but despite the horrid that the people of Houston are dealing with, the storm has brought out the greatness in people.

During the worst of the flooding these teenagers in Texas rescued numerous of their fellow residents. These young men risked their lives for people they did not know, when they did not have to help. In an age where millennials are constantly making negative headlines, even they have shined during the recovery process in Houston.

The disaster has brought out the most generous of Americans at the top of the economic totem pole.

Almost immediately after disaster hit, Texans star J.J. Watt started a campaign that has now exceeded $18 million in donations.

Tech billionaire Michael Dell pledged $36 million to the relief of his birthplace.

The Hurricane has also brought out the best in our embattled President. Trump has promised $1 million of his money to the people of Houston.

During the aftermath of the hurricane, President Trump went to Houston to meet with and help feed victims of the storm, following in the footsteps of previous Presidents.

Media headlines are often negative about our country, especially with the current political state.

Yet, during Harvey, nothing has been exposed other than the absolute kindness of the people in our country, and those in others.

Just like when Katrina devastated the people of Louisiana, Mexico has againoffered aid to the United States in a serious time of need. Despite a President that wants to build a wall between the two countries, Mexico is ready to send aid to the people of Texas.

The outpouring of support for the people of Texas from people around the country shows the good in people. A good that has not been heavily present over the last year.

Election season and the aftermath of Trump's election has divided America like never before. One of the most controversial and surprising President's in our nation's history has led to rifts across the great nation.

Yet, when it comes down to it, we are all Americans, and we are all people.

Citizens, corporations, and those that can help have put aside the everyday political banter. During the wrath of Harvey, we have seen those that can help, help as much as they can.

People are literally lining up to help the people of Houston. JJ Watt has taken a hand on approach, and those like him with a platform have inspired millions to help.

Corporate businesses alone have pledged $157 million to the relief cause.

Joel Osteen, the pastor of Lakewood Megachurch, received a lot of slack for reportedly not opening the doors of his church, yet the doors are open.

Bernie Sanders, the country's most popular politician, has asserted before that the United States is not a giving country, and has consistently attacked big corporations and billionaires.

Nevertheless, there has been nothing short of an outpour of compassion from the 1% to help those in need. Corporations are matching donations, promising cash and supplies, and athletes and teams are helping make sure that Houston comes out stronger than before.

Our country, and our world, can be very divided. Nevertheless, in times of disaster and great need, the true virtues of our fellow human beings are revealed.

The United States, and the people that inhabit it will always look out for one another. Houston will recover, and it will be due to the goodness of those that help that great city get back on their feet. From here and from abroad.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
