Kamala Harris is an excellent running mate for a variety of reasons, but three main reasons stand out to me.
1. She puts others first.
Harris has chosen to spend her life fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves. She has helped Californians achieve marriage equality, worked to save and restore the environment, helped give drug offenders a second chance, fought for the Affordable Care Act, and more. Her website states, "It's the privilege of Kamala's life to work on behalf of the people of California". This woman is devoting her life to working for us, the people, which is something the White House hasn't seen in years.
Regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, she believes in banning evictions and foreclosures during the pandemic as many are the result of the economic devastation brought on by COVID-19. She has also urged the Trump administration to provide more relief to those minority groups that have been disproportionately affected by the virus.
2. Both her work and personal experiences.
Kamala Harris is currently a senator for the state of California and has been since 2017. As a senator, she serves on many committees, including the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Committee on the Judiciary. In her two terms, she has greatly contributed to establishing equality for all, reforming the criminal justice system, addressing substance abuse, providing more opportunities for working and military families, and more. She helped achieve marriage equality in California, pledges to end mass incarceration and private prisons, established more rehabilitating options for certain crimes rather than jail time, helped bring down international trafficking gangs, and more.
Kamala was also born in Oakland during the Civil Rights Movement. She came into this world as it was turning a corner, but injustice still plagues this nation today. She looked to leaders such as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American to serve on the US Supreme Court, as examples and has been fighting for others ever since.
3. She is progressive.
Progressive is exactly what this nation needs right now. We seem to be falling back rather than moving forward regarding social issues. Breonna Taylor and so many others have still not been given justice, the LGBTIA+ community is still not fully accepted or welcomed in this nation. This country is plagued by racism, misogyny, and homophobia. We need a Vice President who sees everyone as equal no matter the color of their skin, their religion, or their identity. Harris will be that VP.
To me, it seems that Harris sees the best in everyone. She believes in equality, she does not believe in tearing children from their families at the border, and she believes in helping those convicted of crime move forward, rather than rot in a jail cell or die.
Kamala Harris is just what this country needs in a Vice President. Joe Biden made the best choice due to her selfless tendencies to fight for the benefit of others, because she fights for what is unjust, and she will help the nation turn a new corner.
