Some people flourish in college, finding new friend groups, discovering new interests, and studying things that interest them down to their soul. Others meander through, enjoying all of the interesting things life at college has to offer. And yet others like me struggle to be satisfied with themselves no matter how good their GPA is, how many extra curricular activities they do, or how much time they spend doing professional development.
I'm one of those people that struggles to find a balance between school and everything I do outside of it. I always feel like I could be doing more but at the same time I'm already struggling to get a decent amount of sleep and take care of myself. People would be envious of my GPA, my volunteer hours, and the amount of time I spend doing professional development activities. But, still I feel dissatisfied with myself, and this creates a worry that I'm not doing everything I should and or could be doing.
When this happens, we all need to remember that we are enough. No matter how much or how little time you spend doing extra curricular activities, nothing is going to feel better than a full night's rest. And staying up till too early in the morning doing homework? It's not worth it. It's okay to take a loss on a little grade every now and then to help maintain your mental sanity. It's also okay to tell people no.
I probably struggle the hardest with the concept of telling people no. I often find myself stretched too thin doing things I don't care about or don't want to do simply because I didn't value myself enough to say no. It's not mean, and it does not hurt the other person. It simply protects you from overextending yourself and feeling stressed and anxious later. And, even though, for whatever reason you will feel guilty afterwards, you just need to ignore it. It's not worth it to hurt yourself helping other people. If you are not fully yourself, it becomes not only impossible to help others, but to just go through your day and be successful.
We all need to take a step back and make a list of everything wonderful about ourselves. This might sound extra, but it's something you can think about when times get hard and you find yourself tired or stressed and thinking that you are not enough. Because in all reality, you are enough. You are smart, you are kind and you are beautiful. You have to be able to remind yourself of this because it will help you get through all of the days ahead of you.
Feeling not quite happy with yourself can be good sometimes, it pushes us to do better, and be better. But for everyone, there comes a point when it becomes negative. There comes a point when it begins to cripple your self worth and your confidence. This is when you need to remember your list, and this is when you need to remember how truly amazing you are.
