Happiness: What Does It Mean To You?

Happiness: What Does It Mean To You?
Julia Trout

Happiness comes in so many different forms depending on who you ask. If you ask a child what makes them happy they might respond along the lines of describing their favorite TV show or playing with friends at recess. The answer you would get from an adult would be much different. For a parent, it might be their children. For someone who cares a lot about their profession, happiness to them might be their career. Regardless, all answers are different. Some may be descriptive, some may not. Some answers might be the same as yours, some may be completely different. No matter what though, any answer one receives is describing what makes someone else light up, smile, and feel very good inside. It is what makes them who they are; unique.

Curious as to what makes certain people happy, I chose to ask 4 individuals, all of different ages, to describe in a few sentences what makes up their personal happiness. Here are their answers..

7 Year Old Child--

What makes me happy is my blanket, my iPad, Mommy, and my friend Rusty! To me, happiness means being happy, having fun, and swimming in the deep end of my swimming pool. Also, I really enjoy snuggling with my Mommy and blanket!

Mid-Twenty Year Old Adult--

What makes me happy is being with my family and friends, having everyone watching TV, having a tasty meal, or just being in each other's presence is what brings me pure joy. I love those special moments that are forever memories that I can cherish. Being surrounded by the ones you love and those who love you, could be the greatest gift of all; something that money truly can't buy.

Mid-Forty Year Old Adult--

What makes me happy now is seeing my children healthy and succeeding in life. It makes me happy when I can make a difference in the lives of somebody else regardless of how big or little that difference is making in their lives. Happiness to me is not having things rather the happiness of others around me.

Late Sixty Year Old Adult--

What makes me happy is my kids and grandkids. Due to all that has been occurring with my family, creating peace with all that has happened over time has contributed a lot of positiveness to my mental health. If I had one wish, it would be to spend every second with my kids and grandchildren. I love to look around me and to see so many of grandkids grow up and succeed in all that they have chosen to do. Whether it is grabbing lunch with my family or just walking around Walmart, nothing can quite beat their presence. Family is the most important aspect to my life. As I do love to cook too, I enjoy it more when I can share the meal with everyone that I love!

Based off the feedback I gathered from a widespread of individuals, happiness is defined in many ways. Personally, happiness is a key factor to my life. Being happy, is knowing that I am surrounded by such a loving and incredible group of friends and family. Without them, happiness would not exist for me. Also, knowing that I have the opportunity to go after my dreams with the use of an education puts the biggest smile on my face. I am so grateful for the chance to chase after what I love. Also, coffee and great book is key to a happy day!

If someone asked you what made you happy, what would you say?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
