If Laughter Can Be The Best Medicine, Then Happiness Should Go Right Next To It

Bertrand Russell once said, "To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness." This quote is basically saying that having something that you truly love and need is an essential part of being happy. This quote makes sense especially in our society today because having something that one truly wants can cause him or her to continue to strive for it, until they accomplish it.

Bertrand Russell said this quote because he obviously believes that if the human does not have something that they truly love or desire they cannot be happy. Which is true because many things achieve happiness. In my case, my friends and family give me happiness, but for others, it can be money their pets or any other object or person. Personally, I believe if a person can achieve happiness then they have just tackled one of lifes biggest obstacles.

In addition to what Bertrand Russell said, having the pursuit of happiness can take us very far in our lives because it is one thing that no one can take away from us. It does not necessarily mean having lots of money, it means being joyful, but everyone has their own definition of it. For example, the dictionary defines it as, "a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy, as long as you don't do anything illegal or violate the rights of others." That it is a right given to people because of the Declaration of Independence, which is not entirely true because people achieved happiness long before the Declaration of Independence came. In addition, people do not usually need a piece of paper telling them what they can and cannot do, particularly in today's society.

Lastly, as I said before, no one can take away your happiness because it is not something that anyone can touch. However, even though no one can touch it people can try to get inside your head, causing you not to feel happy towards that one thing they just took away from you. Which is okay because you can always become happy about another thing that is essential to your life. However, if it is something dear and important to you, then it is definitely worth the fight since you never know what may happen next.

In the end, I believe the pursuit of happiness is very important because if someone does not have it, it can cause him or her to not enjoy life, as they should. They say laughter is the best medicine, so maybe happiness is a part of that too. Bertrand Russell's quote reflects upon the idea wonderfully because one can be happy, but the thing they are happy about is not something that is truly essential to them as a person.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
