Southern California is world-renowned for having gorgeous weather all year long. From the sunny beaches of San Diego to the sunbathed Los Angeles skyline, SoCal is synonymous with sunshine. As such, the area receives very little rainfall, resulting in drought conditions and increased fire danger. The residents of this area are so spoiled by the constant good weather that when a storm does roll through, the entirety of Southern California is plunged into chaos. Here are just some of the things that happen when it rains in SoCal.
1. People are amazed.
Every time it rains harder than a drizzle, people start acting like they've never seen rain before in their entire life. I have distinct memories of days in middle and high school where students would get out of there seats in the middle of class to look outside if it started raining particularly loud or thunder was heard. Once when it began hailing during the school day, my teacher stopped class himself to stare outside in awe.
2. Everyone forgets how to drive.
SoCal traffic is bad enough on its own. It's exponentially worse when literally everyone simultaneously forgets how to drive. The roads are slippery as it is, and they become even more dangerous when everyone on the road is driving like it's their first time operating a car.
3. There is a scramble for sandbags.
A few days before it's forecasted to rain, the news will start advertising places to pick up free sandbags. Southern California was built to withstand earthquakes, not rain, so many places are susceptible to flooding, which the sandbags are meant to combat.
4. Everyone dresses like we're in a deep freeze.
Everything from thin windbreakers to full on parkas is fair game in this type of weather. It doesn't usually get too terribly cold when it rains, but we're used to it being sunny and 72 degrees constantly, so when it gets below 60 we begin preparing for the second ice age.
5. Everything is canceled.
Everyone who plays an outdoor sport gets super excited when rain shows up in the forecast. Games and practices almost never get canceled due to weather since rainy days are few and far between, so when they do it's a reason to celebrate.
6. Everyone is posting on social media about the weather.
On rainy days. almost every Snapchat story is an artsy photo of rain on a window or something along those lines. The hashtag #larain trends on Twitter because of everyone freaking out about the water suddenly falling from the sky.
While Southern California is usually an awesome and sunny place to be, it can get pretty hectic when it starts to rain. Let's just all hope it never starts to snow down here, or else all hell is sure to break loose.
