"The World Turned Upside Down". Famous line from Hamilton: The American Musical from the song " Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)" telling about how America famously defeated the British, turning the tides of the American Revolution. This past weekend, Hamilton has been at the forefront of major news again, not because of the musical itself, but because of what happened November 18th in Broadway. Vice President-elect Mike Pence was in attendance, and AFTER the musical had ended, as they occasionally do, they wanted to address the crowd, specifically Mike Pence. To quote Brandon Victor Dixon, actor playing Aaron Burr, he said "We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights". The next morning President-elect Donald Trump hit to Twitter tweeting, "Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!". Now that you have some context, let's dive into it a bit farther as I give my opinion on all of this.
Now, if you don't know me, I would just like to mention that I'm a huge Hamilton fan. From the beginning of it's Broadway run to the Hamilton Mixtape coming out soon, and all of the cast and creators, especially Lin-Manuel Miranda. So it's fair to say that I'm biased, but I will try my best to give a not-as-biased opinion on the situation. So to begin, AFTER the cast of Hamilton gave the show, they stayed on stage to address the audience, something that a lot of musicals tend to do, especially in the professional world, this way they can interact with the audience in a different way. So, I wasn't surprised when I heard that this happened. I saw the video on Facebook quickly after the video was posted, and my initial opinion was that I thought it was well said. Dixon didn't say what he said in a rude way, and overall gave a speech that everyone in the cast was thinking. He was very kind and spoke from his heart. The majority of the cast of Hamilton supported Hillary Clinton during the election, so, knowing that Mike Pence would be in the audience, it made sense that they would want to speak their minds. In my opinion, what he said, and how it was addressed was very respectable.
The following day, like I had mentioned, Donald Trump decided to give his thoughts on what had happened. He wasn't happy because he felt as though they had disrespected him. I honestly don't believe that he even watched the video, but instead saw a biased headline. The majority of people with a clear and open mind would agree that what Dixon said was respectable. So not only did Trump add fuel to a non-existing fire, but continued to speak his mind about the musical itself saying that it's "overrated". A major issue that stemmed from this was not what Dixon had said, but how the audience felt about Mike Pence even being at the show. Not surprisingly, the majority of the people there weren't happy that Mike Pence was there. But, the argument that people there were being rude isn't valid, because everywhere Donald Trump or Mike Pence goes will be rude. That's just what it is. Whether people applaud Pence or not, doesn't reflect the theatre community in general. People of different genders, ethnicity, and political values will go and see Hamilton, so don't expect it to be all peaches and cream. The fact that Mike Pence went in general was cool enough. Hopefully he actually learned something from his time there.
BTW: #BoycottHamilton isn't possible. They are sold out for years, so don't even try.
UPDATE: Mike Pence, stated that he's not offended at all, and actually enjoyed the show, so everyone can calm down.
