If you're obsessed with "Hamilton: The American Musical," chances are you know what a Hamildrop is. And if you're not obsessed with "Hamilton"... I don't really know what to say. Are you even human?
For those who don't know Lin-Manuel Miranda has blessed us all with additional Hamilton-esque music we didn't know we needed. Every month in 2018, he drops new collaboration content on Hamildrops.com and all music streaming services. We got our first taste of this with the Hamilton Mixtape in 2016 when he brought in artists from all different genres to remix original songs from the musical (it's genius.)
When I found out that March's Hamildrop was going to be a collaboration between Miranda and Ben Platt, I pretty much almost had a stroke. And when they announced that it would be a mash-up of "The Story of Tonight" from Hamilton and "You Will Be Found," the triumphant first-act finale of "Dear Evan Hansen," in which Platt originated its titular role, I almost had another stroke. (It's fine, I'm fine, I'm alive.)
Alex Lacamoire, who arranged "Found/Tonight", took the most poignant lines from both songs and created a rallying cry for all the young activists who are protesting and calling for stricter gun control laws today. The team who made it all happened announced through Twitter that the song was dedicated to the students who survived the school shooting last month in Parkland, Florida and that a portion of the proceeds would go towards the March For Our Lives initiatives.
Platt tweeted a picture of Miranda, Lacamoire, and himself at their first rehearsal for the song, and said he felt "immeasurably lucky to get to support these inspiring kids and #MarchForOurLives. It’s a fight that is so long overdue. #GunControlNow".
Miranda and Platt later announced that they would be performing the song at the march in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, March 24th.
The great thing about "Hamilton" is that it's inherently committed to the revolution. Just because it focuses on historical events does not mean that its ideas, messages, and passions do not carry over to the present day. It says always stand up and fight for what you believe in, and change will follow.
The students from Parkland are incredible leaders, and change is well on its way.
It's only a matter of time.
