We're almost there, y'all: spring training starts so, so soon and I am READY. While we wait those last couple of days until baseball starts up again, I thought we should revisit the terrible emotions that we all face during the offseason.
But not just a brief recap.
I'm giving you a Halsey song that perfectly describes the emotions we all face during those harsh winter months.
1. Confusion — "Now or Never"
The World Series is over. Your favorite team (probably) didn't win the World Series. And this means...no more baseball. What are you supposed to do with all of your time? Knit? You're lost. You start to forget who you are. You have no idea how you're going to make it five months until Spring Training rolls around. The confusion that you're feeling right now is perfectly summed up with this song.
Favorite lyric: "I'm callin' it a night now / Wishin' you were 'round with me / But you're in a different town than me."
2. Fear — "Devil In Me"
It's mid-November. You're hunkering down for a long, cold winter with no baseball to keep you warm. You start to look for other things to watch. What is this "football" that people keep talking about? And also what is "basketball"? All you know is that neither are baseball. You miss baseball. You're scared. What is happening?? This song gets you; it really does!
Favorite lyric: "I went tumbling down tryna reach your high / But I scream too loud if I speak my mind."
3. Sadness—"Is There Somewhere"
Oh man. Things are looking really bleak right about now. It's December. People are talking about the holidays; the only thing you want for Christmas is baseball. Free agency is at a stand still; the Yankees have acquired Giancarlo Stanton. You're eating too much food. It's the WORST. This song is the perfect song for you.
Favorite lyric: "And all I do is cry and complain because second's not the same."
4. Abandonment — "Hopeless"
At this point, your friends and family are tired of hearing about how the Red Sox need an impact bat. They're telling you to calm the hell down and find a new hobby. But you don't want a new hobby--all you want is baseball back. This song really becomes your anthem.
Favorite lyric: "I hope hopeless changes over time."
5. Emo — "Strangers"
It's January. You've come to accept that baseball is never coming back (even though a part of you knows you're just being dramatic and baseball is literally coming back in two months). You're watching old World Series films and MLB Network Countdowns. You and baseball feel like strangers now--hence this song. (Side note--this is literally my favorite song of all time. Please listen to it.)
Favorite lyric: "I must've crossed a line, I must've lost my mind."
6. Hopeful — "New Americana"
Wait--what is this that you're feeling? You see that pitchers and catchers are reporting in a week or so. There's a feeling in the air. Is this...HOPE? You slowly start to realize that yes, yes it is. "New Americana" knows how you feel!
Favorite lyric: "Survival of the richest, the city’s ours until the fall."
7. Surprise — "Heaven In Hiding"
Spring Training is here. You see glimpses of your favorite players in clips. Mookie Betts is fielding fly balls. Robinson Cano is turning double plays. David Ortiz Mike Trout is taking batting practice. Opening Day--it's nearly here! This song is all about figuring out your feelings, and it's perfect for this time of year.
Favorite lyric: "Your eyes light up 'cause you best believe that I got something up my sleeve."
8. Happiness — "Castle"
It is the day you've been waiting for for so long now: Opening Day. Your favorite team takes the field. You lean back in your chair. You hear the crack of the bat, see the ball flying around the yard. You're so happy right now, you convince yourself that this is your team's year. Right Mariners, fans? "Castle" perfectly encapsulates this feeling.
Favorite lyric: "I'm headed straight for the castle /they wanna make me their queen."
