We all know what time of the year it is. Time to start catching up on Halloween classics, getting your costumes together, shamelessly eating tons of candy, and most of all, celebrating! But there's a way to do Halloween and a way not to do Halloween. I'll share with you guys the dos and don'ts of Halloween so you'll know how to celebrate the right way.
DO: Wear something creative
Be a character from your favorite movie or book. Be an animal that's not a cat, bunny or mouse. Do a group costume with friends. I've seen a lot of cool costumes like "Netflix and Chill," the four seasons, playing cards, dalmatians, skeletons. Anything that doesn't scream "basic."
DON'T: Be unoriginal
Don't be that person who shows up wearing bunny ears. Yes, it takes a lot less effort to be basic, but it's a lot more fun being different.
DO: Celebrate
Whether it's trick-or-treating, going to a costume party, having a scary movie marathon- celebrate Halloween. It only comes once a year. It's only once a year that strangers will willingly give you candy, and not out of a white van. So embrace the holiday! Embrace being spooked out by scary movies, and getting stomach aches from being so full from candy. And party hard with everyone else because you're all there to have fun.
DON'T: Do nothing at all
I had a friend in middle school who would celebrate Halloween by shutting all the lights off in her house, pretending no one was home and eating all the candy she would've given to kids. I don't see the fun in that at all. Halloween should be spent going on adventures with friends or family. And Or having a stomach ache from eating so much is never fun unless your friends joined you.
DO: Decorate
If you're still living at home decorate the house. Put out a scarecrow, some jack-o-lanterns, cobwebs- anything that screams Halloween. Let your neighbors know you're celebrating. And if you're in college decorate your dorm with string lights and cobwebs. It never hurts to be festive!
DO: Buy tons of candy
This is the one time of the year that eating too much candy is encouraged. On Halloween there are almost no inhibitions, get crazy, eat as much as you can and don't feel bad about it. Of course, eating it alone in your room isn't as fun as pigging out with friends. So get a group of friends, watch a scary movie and pig out, with no shame.
DON'T: Go out alone
Go out alone. This is pretty much common sense. Going out alone is bad enough, but going out alone on Halloween is even worse. It'd be a lot more difficult to find your friends or for others to find you if you're all dressed up. Whether you're going to a party or trick-or-treating, if you go there alone, it's likely you'll leave alone.
DO: Go to a Haunted House
Go to a haunted house (if you're into that). It can be tons of fun for some people to get so scared they jump and cry for help. Not for me, but if you love a good thrill going to a haunted house or anything along those lines can be a great way to celebrate the spooky holiday.
Overall, there are ways to celebrate Halloween and ways you shouldn't. But as long as you have fun celebrating, that's all that matters. Happy Halloween!
