For some people, the month of October is the month of Halloween, and the month of the greatest holiday ever, but I have never been one of those people. As much as I love the falling leaves, apple picking, and pumpkin carving, I have never been able to get into the spirit of Halloween .
When I was younger, I loved picking out my costume, getting dressed up, and walking around collecting candy. As I got older, my friends and I would get together on Halloween and try and create our own "haunted trail." But after I reached high school, Halloween was just another day; the thrill had worn off.
Halloween just isn't for me. I don't understand the point of getting a costume for one night, and I don't feel the need to use every opportunity I can to get drunk. I've seen advertisements for Halloween parties as early as Wednesday night, almost a whole week before Halloween actually happened, and I find that so ridiculous. Some people will use any excuse to put on a skimpy outfit and get drunk. If that's what you love doing, then that's fine, it's just not anything that I could ever imagine doing.
Every year people ask me what I'm going to be and what my Halloween plans are. I never know what exactly to say. I don't just want to say that I hate Halloween because that's not entirely true; I enjoy seeing kids excited about the holiday, but I don't personally enjoy it anymore and when I say that I don't love Halloween, people take it personally, like I'm a Halloween Scrooge.
When I hear people getting excited for Halloween and what their costume is going to be, I just smile and nod. I think my last Halloween costume was a witch when I was about twelve, so I don't really have more to add to the conversation. I want to be supportive, but it doesn't appeal to me to dress up as a different sexy costume every year.
My favorite part of Halloween is the fact that afterward, all the candy is super cheap. Halloween candy is just so much better, and getting food for cheap is something that I love to do.
The part I understand the least is when Halloween falls on a weekday and people are still excited for it. It's hard to get excited for just another weekday, but some people go all out on dressing up for the holiday, no matter when it falls.
Call me a Halloween hater all you like, because I know it's true. Just because I don't like some people's favorite holiday doesn't mean that I can't see the good side of it. But this Halloween, you will find me hanging out in my room, sitting around waiting to buy all the Halloween candy I want while you're trying to recover from your weekend of partying too much.
