Illinois is getting a new law in 2017. Starting in the new year, hairstylists will be required to recognize domestic abuse in their clients. They will also be able to refer them to support services who will be able to get them the help they need.

This law was signed by Illinois governor, Bruce Rauner. Rauner say's the training will be delivered to barbers, cosmetologists, aestheticians, hair braiders, and nail techs. This training will be given by an hour long course. Illinois is said to employ about 88,000 salon workers and by adding this law and training could save and help many lives. In order to obtain a license, you will be required to attend this course and if you already have a license you will be required to attend the course as well to renew their license.

As many people already know, you develop a relationship with your hairstylist. When you are sitting in a chair with someone grooming you, you often open up. Because of this, hairstylists would be ideal candidates to have this responsibility for their clients.

This law does not give stylists the right to report any violence or reveal any information to authorities. Chicago has a non-profit organization titled "No More". This organization is dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence. "No More" is also considering ways in which they can involve other service sectors such as bartenders in their training program.

Center's for Disease Control have stated that one in four women are victims of severe physical violence by a partner. 65,000 people reported violent incidents involving their partner to Illinois law enforcement.

Here are some signs that someone you know is being abused:

1. Bruises or injuries(black eyes, red or purple marks on neck)

2. Attempting to hide bruises with make-up or clothing

3. Always making excuses like tripping or being clumsy

Here are some signs that you may be being abused:

1. Embarrasses you with put-downs

2. Looks at you or acts in ways that scare you

3. Controls what you do, who you see or talk to, and where you go

4. Stops you from seeing your friends or family

5. Takes your money

6. Makes all of the decisions

7. Threatens to kill themselves

8. Prevents you from working or going to school

9. Blames you for the abuse

10. Destroys or damages your property, or threatens to hurt your pet

11. Intimidates you with guns, knives, or other weapons

12. Shoves, slaps, chokes or hits you

13. Threatens to kill you

If you are experiencing any of these signs or know someone who is there are many support services who will listen and can help you.

Support Services:

DVSAC: 24hr Crisis Line: (530) 272-3467

HRA: NYC Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project: 212-714-1141

The National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233

DHS: 1-877-863-6339

Do you think this law involving service sectors should be a national law, instead of limiting it to just Illinois?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
