Hacking Freshman Year

Four things to be aware of first semester of college

Hacking Freshman Year

Freshman year has been the most challenging part of my life yet. The novelty of my experiences has been as exciting as it has been taxing. One month into the semester and I was wondering if my life was ever going to be in check. As much as that never happened because apparently, college is about having as much going on as possible so you may learn to deal with it, I was able to handle everything happening without so much stress because of the following things:

1. Planner

I had never had to organize my schedule before coming to college but right from orientation I realized that something was always happening on campus and I had to plan for what to attend and when. As a freshman- and basically, any college student- your life revolves around arriving to class on time, making it to appointments and interviews and beating deadlines. Having a planner helps you figure out your schedule in a concise manner and helps you prioritize your time better.

2. Advisors and professors

The thing about being a freshman -or a new student in any field of study- is that you don't know what you don't know. Approaching my professors and talking to my advisor opened doors to a lot of opportunities I didn't know I could get on campus. Talking does not even have to be limited to your advisor or professors but basically, someone who is better acquainted with whatever you are interested in. Simply asking can go a long way into making someone help you out so do no shy away from asking.

3. Don't stress out on that FOMO

I had it. Most of my friends had it. And everyone has it at some point. Fear of missing out is something most people, if not everyone, goes through at the start of college or interactions in a new environment. Social anxiety should not make you worry that your life is not going according to plan. In fact, if you have it then your life is definitely on track. It is normal to feel anxious about making new friends but as time goes you will be able to find your kind of crowd. So take your time, and don't stress about missing out.

4. Let loose

Do not be afraid to try out new experiences. Learn to be uncomfortable with things to be able to do things you have never done before. Being in a comfort zone prevents you from exploring new ideas, classes, and activities. Be adventurous and venturesome. You get to meet new people this way as well as learn what works for you and what does not work for you.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
