GUNS: Protection or Murder?

It is your choice when and for what reason you pull that trigger.

GUNS: Protection or Murder?
Juliet-Echo-Foxtrot from Devianart

I don't watch the news often. Every time, I turn the news on usually it full of sad stories. As of late, the news has been overloaded with shootings. And I'm not talking about photo shoots either. I'm talking about gun shootings.

In the year 2016, there has been already 29,020 incidents with guns. Out of those incidents, there were 23,007 deaths and injuries combined. This data is validated by the Gun Violence Archive Association that formed in 2013 as a not for profit association. Their mission is to give the public free access to accurate info on gun- related violence.

On June 12th in Orlando, a club was attacked. Leaving fifty people dead and fifty-three injured. Fifty lives of men and women that didn't get to tell their families that they loved them one last time. Fifty families that got a call from the Orlando police telling them that their loved ones weren't coming home that night.

I just can't imagine what they went through. And what they are still going through today. How can someone justify killing fifty people? How can anyone justify killing even one person?

The 2nd Amendment says the right of the people to keep and bear arms. That means we are allowed to own a gun or guns legally. But that doesn't mean we get to go around murdering people just because you hate them.

On June 10th, Christina Grimmie was shot four times while signing autographs for fans after her concert that day. The shooter then shot himself after being tackled by Grimmie's brother. Christina was known for her singing. The only known reason that Christina is not with us today is because the man was obsessed with her. The shooter did not know her and had no motive to kill her.

I am not at all saying that we shouldn't be able to protect ourselves by owning guns. I feel that having a gun is a way to protect yourself just like owning a taser or pepper spray. But there aren't people running around and killing people with pepper spray or tasers. They may be harmed, not killed.

You are probably thinking, those two incidents don't affect me. They didn't happen in your town, not even your state. I looked up how many shootings have happened in my town. In Dallas, Ga, there were nine shootings since March of this year. There were six people injured or killed in nine incidents in my town.

The shootings might not hit the news, but they happen everywhere. Everyone's lives matter. Whether it be one person or a hundred people, they matter. They are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, a friend to someone. You might not know them, but someone did/ and they are hurting because of it.

I am going to be clique when I say this. Yet I am not sorry at all. Guns don't hurt people. People hurt people. The cold metal object is not the monster. It is the person who is holding their finger to the trigger. It is their choice and only their choice whether they pull the trigger or not.

Bang, Bang!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
