Just recently, Parkland high school senior and survivor, Emma Gonzalez, was part of a photo shoot for Teen Vogue on teen activists. The photo shoot included an image of Emma ripping up a shooting range poster. Unfortunately, those who are against the anti-gun protest photoshopped the poster of the shooting range to a poster of the U.S. Constitution.
This photoshopped image enraged many conservatives, stating that it was disrespectful and outrageous that this photo could have even been taken and released. Well, sugar honey iced tea! That’s how I feel when they say that gun laws won’t change, and that teachers will be issued guns, and that students should “just learn CPR to help victims.”
My favorite thing that gun lobbyists say is that banning guns infringes on their constitutional right. Okay, yeah, the Bill of Rights is part of the Constitution, because they’re the first ten amendments to it. But, please, tell me where in the actual Constitution or amendments does it say that we have a right to own guns? Oh? The second amendment states that we have a right to own guns? Yes, you’re right.
But let me tell you what it actually says: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that the militia, which we no longer have and no longer have a use for, was able to keep arms. Those serving in the militia were able to bear arms.
Is the NRA part of the militia? Are gun lobbyists part of the militia? No. Why? Because we have no militia! So, all these guns, especially assault weapons such as the AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle that Nikolas Cruz used in the Parkland shooting, are not really protected under the second amendment.
Okay, but that what about the right to bear arms for self-defense? Okay, that’s understandable, I can see why you would all want to own a weapon for self-defense. But again, an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle is not at all necessary for self-defense.
The movement to ban guns is NOTon all guns.
The ban is on assault weapons that are used in the military. In war. With reform such as an all-day safety class and written exam that are conducted regularly, a rigorous mental health and drug screening, and an intensive background check, similar to what Japan has, the goal is to make it harder for people to obtain guns of any sort.
If you really believe that the right to bear arms is more important than a child’s right to live, you need to check yourself.
If you believe that we are infringing on your right to the second amendment, you best believe you are infringing on our right to live a life that is free of the constant worry that we’re going to be the next victim looking down the barrel of a gun.
