As the years pass by, modern etiquette is constantly getting redefined. With social media, texting and our heart being louder than our brain, sometimes we forget the standards of being a modern lady, including traditions that have been passed down for hundreds of years. So ladies, here are the guidelines to being a lady.
A lady offers to help someone in need. Whether you hold a door for someone coming in or out, help someone jump start their car, or drive to your friends house at 3 a.m. because her boyfriend just broke up with her, it's always nice to lend a helping hand. Your small gesture can go a long way for someone.
A lady does not use rude or shocking language, especially at the table. I admit that I tend to have a sailor's mouth, but I try to watch what I say. Using fowl language, especially when making a first impression or in a formal setting, can pose a negative perception of you and isn't appropriate. We all say curse words when we're angry or trying to express how we feel, and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Be careful of what you say. You never know who is listening or how they will perceive you.
A lady dresses tastefully. Modern day fashion has adopted the philosophy of showing more skin and accentuating a female's best features, but when do you draw the line? While we may feel empowered when we show a little cleavage and feel "hot," what are we really saying? A lady should be proud of her body, but she should also respect it. Wear outfits that you are comfortable in and make you look like a respectful woman. They always say when you look good, you feel good.
A lady always appreciates his generosities. Never let his gestures go unnoticed, even if it's something small like opening a door for you, or offering to pick you up. I'm sure we all know what it feels like when you go the extra mile for someone and they don't appreciate it. If someone takes time to do something they don't have to do out of the kindness of their heart, take the time to say thank you or how much you appreciate all the things they do for you.
A lady always has good table manners. That should go without being said, but in case you forgot, let me remind you. Don't chew with your mouth open. Don't have your elbow on the table. Do not be on your phone while at the table (this is actually a huge pet peeve of mine). If you have to take a call or use the restroom, excuse yourself. Make sure you know the difference between your salad fork, your main course fork and your dessert fork.
A lady always says, "yes, please," and, "no, thank you." A lady also will say, "yes/no ma'am," and, "yes/no sir." It's not just a thing in the South. Those phrases go a long way and show respect, no matter who you're saying it too.
A lady is always kind, gracious, and confident. You should always be nice to everyone. You never know what someone is going through, and your smile and kind words can make a difference in someone's day. Be gracious when you meet someone new or making a business arrangement of some sort. A bad attitude will get you nowhere. Be confident like you're Beyonce. You are the only version of you and you should own it. Boys definitely like a girl with confidence and people will more than likely show you respect because you carry yourself to a high standard. However, remember there is a difference between cocky and confident. And always remain humble.
