Valentine's Day is an amazing holiday, especially if you're in a romantic relationship. In fact, most advertisements would have the public believe that's the only type of love there is to be celebrated on Valentine's Day. But what does that mean for single people? Or children? When there is no romantic love in your life what is there to celebrate on Valentine's Day?
As someone who has never had a Valentine, I know how weird this day can be. It seems like everyone in the world has found someone to love, and yet there you are. Alone again. It doesn't seem fair nor does it seem possible, and for some reason, you're stuck between depression and bitterness. But I'm going to ask you to think about a few things before the bitterness takes hold. Firstly, where is your family today? How are they doing? Answer that and then think if you love them.
What about friends? Do you have any friends you haven't spoken to and really need to catch up with? What about other single friends that may not have plans? Can you be with them? Answer those questions, then think if you love your friends.
Do you have pets? Those furry, fluffy and cute, or even scaly and gracefully majestic little animals that love you with everything they have because you are their world. Have you played with them today? Told them you love them lately? Answer these questions, and then think about if you love your pets.
What about fictional characters? Is there a person in another world that you would die for? Do you consider them as close to you as anyone could be? I know this sounds strange, but think about it. Do you love a fictional character?
There are far more than one kind of love in the world. The love one has for family, friends, pets, even celebrities and book or TV characters, that's still love and it is still worth celebrating. Valentine's Day is for love, and so many versions of love go unnoticed and uncelebrated that it's time we recognize them. So whether or not you have romantic love in your life, you are loved immensely and that is something worthy of celebration.
