Are you a young, Catholic woman? Hello!
This article is a stepping stone in discernment for you. Discernment is difficult, especially as a Catholic woman. Here are some steps to get you started in the process.
Step 1: Reflect and Pray.
As young women, there are so many directions and paths that it can seem as if everyone is pulling you down. It is important to cancel out all the white noise of the world and reflect. What are some things you enjoy? What are your hopes? God doesn’t just assign life plans offhandedly. Free will exists, He takes into account what you want. That being said, He does have a plan for you. For me, this has always been terrifying. As a bit of a control nut, the idea of something, especially an issue of the magnitude, out of my control is amble cause for wringing my hands. It’s important to instead recognize this reality, as the absolute blessing and source of absolute comfort that it is. Comfort sought in the knowledge that God will provide.
Step 2: Find a Spiritual Director.
A spiritual director is a person whose job is to provide support for you as you work to develop your relationship with God. This is not a necessary step, yet many find it a source of comfort in the discernment journey. To find a spiritual director, one usually does not have to look farther than their own parish. Talk to your priest. If the two of you have a close relationship – ask about him possibly acting as your spiritual director. If not, he will definitely be able to direct you to other worthy candidates for the post.
Step 3: Explore Your Options.
Research, talk to your spiritual director, enlist the advice of people who love you and explore the options available to young women in the faith. Test the waters of all the perspective futures that you feel you could be called to.
Step 4: Take a Breath.
Take a deep breath and pray. Have faith that God has your back. Have courage that God will be with you the entire way, you will not be alone.
