17 Places To See And Eat Your Way Through Seattle, As Told By A Local
Hailey Hastings

For the short 20 years of my life, I have lived in Seattle. And no it really doesn't rain here every day and yes there really is a Starbucks on every block. Through living in this city, I've found that it is the most diverse, welcoming, beautiful city in the United States. I thought I would make this compilation of the best places to visit should you find yourself in the Emerald City.

Must see places:

1. Amazon Go Store

As everyone is I'm sure aware, recently the first ever cashier-less store has opened in Seattle, made possible by Amazon. And let me just say, as an introvert, it's heaven sent. I can get all my groceries without having to talk to a single person

2. MoPop

This is easily one of my favorite places in the city. The Museum of Pop-Culture, or MoPop, has a bunch of exhibits, including film and tv props from different genres. There is also a restaurant downstairs. It's a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it.

3. Space Needle

It's just a ride of passage if you come to the emerald city you have to visit it's most famous landmark there's no way around it. If you're up for it, you can even take a ride to the top and look over the entire city.

4. Gasworks Park

I just recently found out about the best view in Seattle I feel the need to share. When I say the best view in Seattle, I mean BEST. It overlooks the water and the entire city at ground level as opposed to the view you'd get in the Space Needle.

5. Pike Place Market

Yet another rite of passage. You can't really get the full Seattle experience if you don't visit this market. If you don't go to Pike Place, did you truly even go to Seattle? It's one of the best places to really dive into the Seattle culture. Make sure to check out the shops under the market — they are all local and extremely unique.

6. Fremont Troll

Seen in TV shows and movies, such as 'Once Upon a Time' and '10 Things I Hate About You," The Troll is one of Seattle's most notable landmarks.

7. Gum wall

While this may be Seattle's grossest landmark, it's definitely one you want to participate in. Some people suggest the "take a piece and leave a piece" method, but I wouldn't recommend it.

8. Olympic sculpture park

While this isn't a view of the city, it is a view of the beautiful Elliot Bay. There's unique art, food, drinks, and seats to just chill out. It's a must-go spot for photographers and art snobs.

9. The Great Wheel

One of the newer additions to this great city is one of the largest Ferris wheels in the United States. The views at sunset from the wheel are unbeatable. It's a bit pricey, so it's definitely a splurge, but I would recommend you do it at least once.

10. Capitol Hill

Seattle has many neighborhoods, but Capitol Hill is a must. It's often described as an equivalent to the Castro in San Francisco.

Must eat places:

1. Dick's Drive-In

This is almost (if not more) necessary than the Space Needle and Pike Place. You have to visit one of the many spots open around the city. It's greasy and cheap — what more could you want out of a burger joint?

2. Ivar's on the Waterfront

While the other Ivar's spots will be just as good, nothing beats the walk-up fish bar on Pier 66. If you only order one thing, do yourself a favor and order the clam chowder — it's the best money can buy.

3. Trophy Cupcakes

I don't normally have a huge sweet tooth, but these cupcakes are top of the line, hands down. They're the best you'll ever eat — especially the Oreo one.

4. Crab Pot

This place is a little more on the pricey and fancier side, but the food is incredible. If you're a fan of seafood, this is a must-hit spot in Seattle. Bonus: they validate parking!

5. Ferry Noodle House

I stumbled upon this place by accident, and I'm so happy I did because the fresh rolls are otherworldly. It's located conveniently on the bridge to 1st Street ferry riders.

6. Uwajimaya

I wouldn't have found this place if actual tourists didn't take me here, so hats off to those nice Canadians. The Korean BBQ here is so good, and if that's not your thing, you're in luck — it's a food court, and they have options for any taste buds.

7. New Saigon

This place is hidden away in the Westlake area of downtown, and I think they're just trying to hide that they have the best peanut sauce and pho in the city.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
