You might have noticed that growing up your family did things a bit differently from you peers in elementary school. You would go over to other people's houses and wonder why they didn't pray before every meal. Your friends would get slightly annoyed when you couldn't sleep over on Saturday nights or had to leave early on Sunday because of church. Here are some things you might remember while growing up in a Christian home.
One acronym: WWJD.
You owned way too many of these bracelets to even count.
You attended VBS every summer.
You can probably recall most of the themes of the bible schools you attended too.
AWANA: Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed or any other weeknight children's ministry.
2 Timothy 2:15
... and you still have a craft from your time there.
Probably a picture frame from popsicle sticks or something similar.
You thought the B-I-B-L-E song was the bomb dot com.
Anytime someone says "Bible" to this day, you probably sing it in your head.
A close second would be "Father Abraham."
Who doesn't love sticking your tongue out in church as a kid?
You couldn't have a sleepover on Saturdays because of church.
Or you had to picked up early Sunday morning.
You can still remember what your first Bible looked like.
It was probably a Precious Moments one, no judgement here.
Youth Group Retreats were the highlight of the year.
You can probably also recall the themes, games, and food served there. One praticicular thing I remember is chocolate fountains.
You attended Church Camp every summer.
You probably met your first "love" there as well.
The best part of Sunday School was the animal crackers.
No joke, my church still has them as snacks and other alternatives for those with allergies.
Most kids had the "sex talk" while you had the "purity talk."
While the two can go hand-in-hand, virginity and purity are quite different.
Fall Family Fun Day every October.
My church's is actually coming up in a couple weeks.
Trunk-Or-Treat.
Members of the church dress up as different characters of the Bible and have candy in their trunks. Ya know, in a non-creepy way.
You consider your first communion as a significant life event.
As it should be. I have the day I accepted Christ and the day I was baptised memorized.
"Senior Sunday" the Sunday before or after high school graduation.
You probably received a bible with a handwritten message from your youth pastors in it.
Your favorite CD was WOW Hits!
And you might still have a few somewhere.
You always got a new dress/outfit for Easter Sunday.
It never failed, even throughout high school I always bought a new dress for Easter.
(Almost) Last, but not least, Veggie Tales.
You most likely remember the theme song, character names, and a couple other "silly songs" to this day. I still know The Hairbrush Song, sung by the lovely Larry the Cucumber.
Most importantly, you had/have amazing God-fearing parents who taught you to love the Lord with all your heart (and lean not on your own understanding).
Even though it sometimes seemed unfair to see my childhoods friends with so much freedom, looking back now, I'm so incredibly grateful for the restrictions my parents placed on me. I'm grateful for them "forcing" me to go to church when I was beyond tired Sunday morning. I'm grateful for them showing me what it truly means to have a relationship with God. There isn't a day I don't remember attending my church. My household has been Godly for as long as I can remember. I'm grateful for the opportunity to love the Lord with every cry of my heart. Though growing up in a Christian home may have seemed strange at times, it's something I wouldn't change for the world.
