Grow Where You're Planted

Even when it seems impossible

Moving. It’s a touchy topic for people who actually move during their childhood years, especially when it’s frequently. This very topic has been my life for the past eighteen years: I settle into a home, meet new friends, attend a new school, and then almost suddenly its all over and I’m packing my bags and settling into yet another new place every two to four years. For metaphors sake its like a plant being uprooted from the ground and thrown into a brand new environment forced to readapt to the soil and the weather it must now live in.

As you can probably gather from this information above, the process is emotionally draining. Saying so many hello’s and goodbye’s so quickly almost makes you numb to the pain of leaving some great friends in a great place that you loved dearly and made so many memories in. Many of you probably know what I’m talking about. You know what’s coming so you brace yourself, you prepare, and you promise yourself you won’t cry this time. But you do and you hate it and you hate the life you live. But I want you all to hear me when I say this:

You are extremely privileged to live the life that you have been given. It may not feel like it, but so many people aren’t able to travel as much as you do, whether it’s the globe or just the next state, country, or city over.

Because of the amount of travelling you do, it gives you a glimpse of the world that not many people are able to experience. Just like flowers learn to bloom even in the shadiest of spots, you can learn to grow and experience all of the new life and experiences surrounding you. They’re really not all bad. You get to taste all of the local food, discover the hidden gems of your neighborhoods best antique shops, and meet people who you never would have known existed before.

Not only that but the King of Kings is watching over you through all of this. He is smiling down on you as you grin, bear it and fake it till you really do make it. And all of a sudden you catch yourself in a group of people who genuinely love and care about you and whom you’ve learned to love and care about just as much.

Having faith in the Lord is so important when it comes to moving. Your own strength can only take you so far. If you’re feeling frustrated with where you are and are feeling like you can’t connect with anyone around you, take it to the Lord. He has all of the answers you could ever need and if you ask He will surely provide. That’s the beauty of the power and the awesomeness of our God. Even when you feel alone and so in the dark, God will be there right by your side to be your best friend and to be the light in your life.

If you’re feeling alone right now or like you just don’t fit in wherever you are right now I urge you to reach out to God and to talk to Him. Talk to Him about everything, because I promise you He wants to hear all of it, because He cares about you and He wants you to succeed, and grow where you are planted. So wherever you are, dig down deep and put your roots in Christ and let Him lead you down a better path, one that is never lonely and unchanging in its steadfast love.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
