It's no secret that dorm life leaves something to be desired. There's the lack of space and the sad reality that no matter how many throw pillows and mattress pads you buy, your bed will never be the same as the one waiting for you at home. The one thing most freshmen didn't consider beforehand was how gross dorm life can be. I underestimated how dirty college kids, including myself can be and thought I'd document some of the grossest things that are so often found in a dorm.
1. Clumps of hair
Vacuuming isn't always a priority and, especially with girls, the amount of hair that accumulates on the floor of a dorm over the course of a semester is A LOT. Whether from doing our hair for a night out or brushing it out after a shower, it seems like we can never catch up with the grossly large amount of hair around our room. The communal shower is a whole other issue when it comes to people leaving their hair around, and it's not fun to have to clean up yourself.
2. Sticky floors
Wherever you go, there always seems to be some spill that no one bothered to clean or some other mystery substance making the floor sticky. Its safe to say you're better off never going barefoot. Shower shoes and slippers are much needed.
3. A never-ending pile of garbage
Even if you and your roommate have a schedule worked out for who takes out the garbage and when, it always seems to get to the point where the trash can is overflowing and out of sheer laziness, you ignore it until you can't possibly fit another item in it.
4. Proof of last night's escapades on Sunday morning
Whether its a pizza box clearly ordered by a very hungry, very drunk person or in rare cases, the remnants of some one who just couldn't quite make it to the toilet when the alcohol came back up, you never quite know what to expect to find.
5. Weird smells
Someone burnt their popcorn in the microwave again, a frat boy over did it on the cologne again, or worse there's some smell wafting through the halls from some unknown source you can't even begin to try to identify.
Despite these less than ideal circumstances, dorm life is simply part of the college experience. It makes coming home that much sweeter and makes for some pretty unforgettable, if not always pleasant, memories.
