"Grey's Anatomy" As Told By My Mom, A Nurse

At this point in the show, season 11, the doctors at the Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital have seen their fair share of crazy-dramatic moments. From bombs, to hospital shooters, to plane crashes, and countless love affairs, you start to wonder how real or far-fetched the show really is. Well, to answer your questions, I went straight to the source, my mom -- a registered nurse.

After 31 years of nursing, including 3 years in the emergency room, my mom has experienced all the goings-on in a hospital during a typical day. So in honor of "Grey’s" 11th season ending last May, I’ve decided to ask her 11 questions:

1. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen during a day at the hospital?

This guy -- how do I say it -- there was this room down the hall, it had three beds. I was working the night shift when about at two in the morning I heard someone screaming down the hall. I ran down the hall where the noise was coming from, and there was a patient standing on his bed yelling, ‘I woke up and I was masturbating’ and he kept saying it over and over again. He had two other roommates in the room who were elderly gentlemen. They were awake and they pulled the covers up to their face to where all you could see were their eyes, because they were so scared. Needless to say, he was delusional…”

2. Was there any Mer-Der like relationships?

No, I don’t think there was anything like that going on that I was aware of.

3. How many times was your life threatened during a shift?

That kind of stuff doesn’t ever happen really, and I’m thankful it doesn’t. We call it code silver if there were a shooter in the hospital and code purple if we ever need strong assistance somewhere.

4. What was the longest shift you’ve ever worked?

16 hours, two days in a row.

5. How many times did you use a storage room to break down?

Not the storage room, but maybe the break room a few times.

6. Were the on-call rooms always “occupied”?

The on-call rooms that I’m aware of were used for doctors, just to sleep!

7. Did you ever deal with interns who didn’t know what they were doing?

Yes we had to teach them the technical things like starting I.V.s and putting in tubes. They knew all the bookwork, just maybe not hands-on things.

8. Did you and co-workers ever gossip during your lunch breaks?

ALWAYS. Talked about our lives, other co-workers, and doctors…

9. What’s one mistake you see all the time in the show?

For me, it’s the boldness of the interns and what they think they are allowed to do without consulting their superiors. It's surprising to me the lengths they go...

10. If you wished the show would change one thing, what would it be?

The thing that bothers me most is their eagerness to cut on patients. When they see an interesting surgery come through the door, the interns/doctors sometimes don't realize that these are real people and not just exciting cases. It's strange to see how they will do whatever they can to get into a surgery, like lying to others, sleeping around etc.

11. What percentage of the show would you say is falsely portrayed?

Probably 60 percent.

I think it is safe to say that most of the jaw-dropping scandals and never-before-seen medical cases that occur at Grey-Sloan Memorial are just to boost ratings, but for regular viewers like me, it doesn’t really matter. The show keeps me on my feet, keeps me guessing (because who would have thought Mer had another half-sister or that Derek would die?!), and it always keeps me interested even after ten years. No matter how many times it seems unrealistic or totally untrue in whichever scene lies ahead, I know I’m not giving up "Grey's" anytime soon.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
